Hey.

Ok so i was after a midi keyboard to control plugins etc. At the time i was using reason, but now im using Native Instruments running through Protools. I had been punching in midi notes with the mouse before that but it was time to to get \"hands on\".

I knew i was restricted to a 25 key as I work on yachts and am always traveling around. I needed something i could put in a bag and take with me on the plane and train etc. I chose the umx because it is very small and it seems to have alot of features.

The day it arrived I took it out the bag and within about 20 seconds i realised that this is one hell of a crappy keyboard. It is very light, but not in a good way. It feels cheap and brittle. Playing it is awful because the keys have little movement when you press (due to it being super slim i guess) so you end up pushing really hard. The keys bend at the end if you push them. I would be embarrassed to be seen using this to be honest. In the photos they have managed to make it look quite good - its junk! It feels like its come out of a christmas cracker.

OK giving it 1 star its a bold statement, but i did this because im trying to tell people to save up another £40 and get an M-Audio Axiom 25. Thats what i did and i love it. I sent the Behringer back the next morning. It was actually the first time I have ever sent a product back to an online shop. Im not one of those people who is into buying and returning. The downside to the Axiom is that it is a fair bit bigger, but i guess thats the price to pay for a decent keyboard. It will still fit in a rucksack. Check out the Oxygen 8, I haven\'t used one but its meant to be pretty good.

If I\'m honest, every Behringer product i have ever uses or owned has been very poor. Literally just stay away from this company. i will never buy their stuff again. Im not the first person to say this. Not at all.

The only thing that the UMX has that these dont is an \"audio interface\" dont worry about this though because the one in the UMX is s_-t anyway. If your serious about music then it will not do even for a beginner.

Behringer- Cheap but not so cheerful

I've had the UMX for a few years now.

Not long after I started producing electronic music I discovered the limitations of using a QWERTY keyboard to bash in notes to my sequencer.

Like many people, back then I was fairly poor and I didn't really know much about electronic music. However I did know that a midi controller with knobs and keys would definately help making music more fun! I opted for the Behringer because not only was it the cheapest controller on here, it also came with a free usb audio interface (WOW!) and a CD packed with VSTs and Ableton Live Lite (DOUBLE WOW!).

Now the VST CD was very useful, lots of good freebies on there. Ableton Live Lite (Behringer Edition!) however is pretty much useless apart from being an advert for Live.

The USB audio interface was very good, giving 1in/1out stereo phono connections which made life a lot easier. It also cured the dreaded laptop PSU noise! (for a while that is)

The controller itself however became a let-down in many ways. A few months after a bought it the keys had worked themselves loose. They didn't fall out, but wiggled forwards and backwards which was quite annoying. I've also had no end of problems getting computers to recognise the supposedly 'Plug and play' device. On XP i've had to install and uninstall drivers several times, and it will reinstall the drivers if you plug it into a different USB port. It actually works a lot less hassle-free in Vista.

The worst problem i've had was when recently, minutes before a gig it stopped sending all midi data, and simply flashed its 4 LEDs in sequence for about 10 minutes. I had to restart the computer twice before it started working again

Apart from the problems, once its connected and recognised it does the job fine!

Having said that, with all the problems i've had, i'd strongly recommend an M-Audio Oxygen or similar. Or an Edirol PCR if you want an even more professional master keyboard.

Now i've learnt the truth about Behringer products the hard way..
