Stylus RMX is a completely new groove-based virtual instrument plug-in for Macintosh and Windows. Stylus RMX is the first product to offer the combined power of Groove Control™ with Spectrasonics Advanced Groove Engine (S.A.G.E.™) technology giving users dramatic new control over groove production and performance.
Spectrasonics’ in-house development team created the new instrument from the ground up, with dozens of new features including the ground-breaking Chaos Designer™, a completely redesigned multi-page user interface, a new core library of sounds, all with a focus on realtime groove creation and performance.

The massive new 7.4 gigabyte core-library in Stylus RMX has thousands of cutting-edge grooves and sounds that were created by Spectrasonics’ international sound design team, and produced by Eric Persing. The new core library contains nearly triple the amount of sounds originally offered in the original Stylus, and contains all the original material as well. The new sounds and grooves in Stylus RMX offer a much wider range of modern musical genres than the original Stylus. Mixes of grooves are broken down into individual tracks called Elements for flexibility and infinite combinations.

Also new in Stylus RMX are thousands of new Kit modules, as well as user Kit construction. The new sound menus have over 10,000 new single hits, all arranged in organized categories. Users can create their own customized multitrack remix grooves and kits, save them into the plug-in, and even share them with other Stylus RMX users on different platforms and hosts. It’s the ultimate Remix-oriented sound module for building grooves.

Stylus RMX marks Spectrasonics’ first expandable virtual instrument, with a series of five new “S.A.G.E. Xpanders” for Stylus RMX at $99US retail each. Stylus RMX also can be expanded with existing Groove Control CD-ROM libraries and even REX files – which opens the door for musicians to utilize their own audio loops within the powerful S.A.G.E. Environment.

Of the many new capabilities in Stylus RMX, possibly the most innovative feature is the Chaos Designer™. With simple controls, the user can introduce musical Chaos into the groove, which allows it to have constantly evolving variations— giving the impression that the audio grooves are improvising. The results can be subtle or extreme by setting the simple to use controls. A Capture feature allows the spontaneous audio chaos patterns to be made into a MIDI file, dragged and dropped into the host sequencer, and played back again for further editing by the user.

Stylus RMX Features Overview:

  • First product using new S.A.G.E. technology (Spectrasonics Advanced Groove Engine)

Stylus RMX

Rating: 9/10

What is it?
One of the most popular drum VSTi’s currently available.

How easy is it to set up?
Not too easy install, care must be taken to follow exactly what is advised.

So what is new?
I will not go into them all of them here as the review would run into many pages but I will start with…

The included FX.

When you hear the FX that are included in RMX you will quickly understand why you will very likely use these FX instead of those that come with your DAW.
You see the 24 FX that ship with RMX are superbly optimized for drum processing of pretty much any kind you might care to dream of. The variety on offer here is incredible for a drum VSTi. Some VST hosts do not even have this many! The sonic quality is surprisingly good. You almost do not want them to be this good as they really should not be, but they are easily good enough (probably better) to use for drum processing within any host, instead of using any 3rd party or host bundled FX .

Presets
I must make a special mention of the extremely well thought out presets. You really do not have to program these FX for great results. The presets are not just specific for drums but they are creatively put together. From simple standard compressor or delay settings to almost all manner of a creative variety. You will likely spend a good deal of time just going through these presets.

One thing I noticed that is worth a mention is that many of the FX can be switched around so you see the back of the FX GUI in a similar way to Reason. So much attention to detail has been given to RMX here. The designs of the various FX help to quickly distinguish one from the other.

The mixer
RMX even has its own mixer. With Auxillary sends. So a user can prepare and mix his entire drum mix without ever leaving RMX. Impressive. So a prepared and processed drum mix can be bounced down to your host of choice providing a superb basis for any song.

Sounds
Stylus RMX has at least 10,000 sounds. Now that is amazing on it’s own. But…all of these sounds are fully categorized as well. It could not be easier to pick a specific type of Kick, Snare , Tambourine, Triangle, Cowbell, Conga, Bongo, Shaker , Stick e.t.c Ok I think you get the picture! A huge choice that is well beyond most users needs and IMO able to meet the most extreme choices of sounds any producer could want. You can access them from the Groove elements menu. Kit mode is ideal for using Stylus as a drum kit that can be triggered from a keyboard for example. But that only scratches the surface as a read through the excellent help document will reveal. Type in a word in the search field and your are on your way.

You can also combine different loops in real time as there are many multis that can be used for this exact purpose.

Competition
FXPansions GURU is probably the closest thing to RMX but they are different in many ways. GURU’s slicing of any audio file into it’s included pads is unique. RMX does not have this, but with 10,000 sounds it is not necessary IMO. I think RMX is slightly cheaper as well.

Positives
Covers just about any type of drum sound you could possibly want especially if you include the add on Expanders Spectrasonics offer.

Many hours of video tutorials are available, even host specific.

Negatives
Installation process could be much easier and shorter.

High Ram usage

Summary
If you are more into a processed type of sound for hip hop and RnB then Stylus will not disappoint , other drum types are readily available as Expanders from Spectrasonics. I highly recommended Stylus RMX.
