Rating: 9/10

I've had the 3G now for 3 or 4 months. It was a toss up between the delta 1010 and this. I read a few reviews and descided that I liked the sound of this system better. I'm now very glad I made this decision.

The set up is a breeze no problems at all. In fact I've had it in two systems now (my old AMD system and now a dual core AMD system) and it worked without a hitch in both systems. This was inconjunction with another PCI soundcard (A soundblaster audigy). I've also had it working under Windows XP and Linux (its supported by the planet CCRMA distro out of the box) with no problems.

The software supplied is easy to install and is relatively intuative, the only inital problem I had at first was getting my head around the fact that you first select the output channel and route the inputs to that rather than route the inputs to an output (if you see what I mean!!)

In all it probably took 30-45 mins to install the hardware and configure the software mixer to get the 3G and Audigy working in harmony.

The sound quality is fantastic, no hum at all on my monitors and even Mp3's appear to have a bit more about them on play back. Recording from multiple sources is a doodle and the quality is excellent (the 2 inputs on the front are a real boon when swaping microphones in and out) and although the 3 LED monitoring system on these inputs is a little limited its still good enough for a quick by eye adjustment if you haven't got the more accurate software mixer on screen.

The drivers are well supported (I've emailed Echo support on a couple of occasions and got replies straight back) and support latencies or around 2ms on my system.

All in all I would recommend this system to anyone looking for a quality audio interface for their computer. In addition, the service and support from Dolphin and Echo are the icing on the cake!

  • Part 4: Interfaces and soundcards

You’ll need to get sounds into and out of your computer when producing music, so some kind of ‘interface’ should be on your shopping list. You might think that you already have the necessary connections, but many of today’s interfaces come with multiple inputs and outputs (for recording bands and outputting to multi-channel surround systems), bundled software, on board sounds and, in some cases, much more, so really are worthy and cost-effective additions to your computer music set-up. In this part of the Dolphin Computer Music guide we’ll discuss all of the interfacing options currently available…
