Shure Beta 58A Description

The Shure Beta 58A® is a high-output supercardioid dynamic vocal microphone designed for professional sound reinforcement and project studio recording. It has become a leading choice among vocalists and touring professionals worldwide.

The Beta 58A maintains a true supercardioid pattern throughout its frequency range. This insures high gain before feedback, maximum isolation from other sound sources, and minimum off-axis tone coloration. The Beta 58A has a shaped frequency response that is ideal for close–up vocals. The superb performance of this microphone is not affected by rough handling because of its rugged construction, proven shock mount system, and hardened steel mesh grille.

Features

  • Frequency response tailored for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass rolloff to control proximity effect
  • Uniform supercardioid pattern for high gain before feedback and superior rejection of off–axis sound
  • Neodymium magnet for high signal–to–noise output
  • Hardened steel mesh grille that resists wear and abuse
  • Advanced pneumatic shock mount system that minimizes transmission of mechanical noise and vibration
  • Minimally effected by varying load impedance
  • Legendary Shure quality and reliability

Shure Beta 58A Reviews

A Fantastic All-Round Mic

I decided to buy the Beta 58A based on the popular opinion that it is the industry standard. After using it, I can definitely see why.

The mic uses a supercardioid pattern, meaning that the isolation from other sounds that are present, such as the hum from my computer fans, are not noticeable on a recording, even when the volume is pushed. I use it as part of a home studio and, even when I\\\'m sat directly in front of my laptop, the recording is still pristine.

This mic shines best in close proximity, which is perfect for vocals. The response is fantastic across the board, and vocals sound warm and bright without any level of hiss.

While I use this at home, the rigid and durable structure of this mic means that it\\\'s also perfect for live use and with studio grade vocals, there can be no complaints about quality.

Overall, this mic is the best in its price range and if you find yourself looking for a decent dynamic mic, you\\\'ve come to exactly the right place.

Definitely a step up from the previous model. Carries the range at both ends of the vocal spectrum with ease, allowing greater confidence when singing.

I have used SM58's for years and always been very happy with there sound. I desided to treat myself and "upgrade" to the Beta58A. I used it in the next rehersal and that was it. I went back the my SM58. The sound was just too course with too much top end. I had to use heavy EQ, mainly on bass, to get the desired effect. There was even a metalic sound to my voice!

I'M NOT SAYING THIS IS A BAD MIC. What I am saying is different voices suit different mic so make sure you try before you buy! £100 odd is alot of money to waste if you don't like to sound. I resently tries the SM86 and Beta87a. Again the Beta just didn't suit my voice where as the SM86 was amazing! If you like the overal sound of the SM58 chances are the next step up would the the SM86 condenser mic. If you find the SM58 and bit too bassy for your voice and as such a little muffled, the Beta58a is probably the mic for you with it's higher sounding output.

Do remember though that a mic is a very personal thing and just because someone sounds great on a certain mic doesn't mean that it will suit your voice the same way.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!

I have owned my 58A for about 7 years. I use it at home alongwith my other equipment as a hobby. My other equipment includes amp, 2 speakers, Cd player and a tape recorder all run through a mixer. I play R&R, country & blues in my spare bedroom which is very small (12ftx9ft) and I play it quite loud and never suffer feedback or bass reaction. In fact the quality and pick-up ability is excellent. This Shure mike handles everything and anything I throw at it. Forgot to mention my equipment is stage use quality. (260w stereo amp and 2 x 500w speakers.)
