Ekeys is the perfect keyboard and software starter pack for home computer users who would love to play and create music but have never known where to begin. A wide selection of music software is included which has been designed to appeal to any age-group.

Whether you want to lean to play the piano, have fun with pre-school nursery rhymes, create your own compositions or mix together the included library of professionally recorded samples, eKeys does it all.

The eKeys Keyboard - It’s a lightweight USB keyboard with 37 mini keys and will fit in with any computer setup due to its compact design. Installation couldn’t be easier. The attached USB cable simply plugs in to any available USB socket on your computer and because the keyboard is Class compliant, installation is automatic in Windows XP and Mac OS X. Drivers have also been included for Windows 95/98/ME/2000 and Apple Mac OS 9.1 or later. Once installation has been completed, the keyboard is ready to use with the included software or any standard music package.

Picture Board - Picture Board is a fantastic early learning tool that teaches children essentials such as numbers, animal names, household objects and the alphabet, while cleverly introducing them to the music keyboard through a fun combination of sounds and images. You can personalize Picture Board by adding your own images (bitmap files) and sounds (wav files), ideal for teaching children the names of family members! It's a great way to learn at many different levels and a perfect introduction to the keyboard.

Music Teacher - Learning the keyboard has never been this much fun. Whether you're a beginner, intermediate player or just need a refresher course, Music Teacher includes 30 lessons to take you from the basic steps right through to playing a complete composition. Practice rhythm, pitch or both together, then get a score and comments from the teacher. You can even load in your favorite songs as MIDI files and learn all the different parts! Then play with the rest of the Music Teacher band and enjoy being part of a world-class performance.

Sound Studio II - Produce your own music with this multi-track studio. Record individual parts, vocals, live instruments, add effects, even print out the score. From a simple tune to a complex arrangement, Sound Studio can do it all. Go wild with 256 MIDI tracks, four stereo audio tracks plus two VST plug-ins and two virtual instruments. Packed full of pro features including Audio, Score and Drum editors. Sound Studio comes bundled with two full VST synthesizers, one full VST drum sample player and six more demo synths and instruments, including the best selling FM7 and B4 from Native Instruments.

M-Audio Evolution eKeys 37

Rating: 5/10

This mini usb keyboard is great value for money and easily one of the most portable on the market. Although the keys are smaller than standard it is still easy to play and is a fantastic tool for programming midi keys and drum parts etc. The main drawback I\'ve found is the lack of a pitch wheel and octave selector. There is room on the left side of the keys for this but M-Audio have chosen to leave them out. The pitch wheel I can live without but not being able to shift the octave means having to mess about with the drum mapping to play various midi drum units such as BFD or EZdrummer. The size is great for part of a mobile recording setup, I take mine to Thailand with me and it goes in my main bag no problem. A little bit more thought about potential users wouldnt have gone amiss though.

Rating: 9/10

The eKeys 37 is a well-designed keyboard ideal for not just the would-be musician requiring learning right from the basics, but also for a creative musician needing a cheap but versatile and easy recording and arranging set-up.

The eKeys acts as a tool for getting your ideas down onto your computer and then with the easy-to-use software compiling them and forming them into a song. The software it comes with is a little simple for more experienced users who know exactly how they want something to sound, but more in-depth software is readily available, and the software provided is easily sufficient for most; the MIDI sound range is extensive and adaptable. The teaching software is decent, with applications from teaching toddlers the basics of communication to teaching you to read and play music, with the flexibility to let you import your own music files for playing and analysing. I haven’t had much use for the pre-recorded samples but they sound great and for someone who was into garageband they strike a decent equivalent, although the range is a bit more limited.

The keyboard does not suffer from latency problems as the similarly priced Creative Prodikeys dual keyboards do, and the notes have a similar feel to classic keyboards. The small notes are both an advantage and a drawback, as they make the keyboard very compact and convenient but also make playing a little difficult; thin fingers are an advantage here. A pitch bend, quick octave shift and sustain hold button would be nice, but are not essential, as the eKeys is hardly a performance item.

Overall the eKeys offers excellent value for money, and the best opportunity for effective recording and learning short of forking out hundreds of pounds. It is very easy to use with plug-and-play capabilities and straightforward software. Other than the keys being a little too small and there being no pitch, octave or sustain controls the keyboard is first-rate for my purposes, and probably the purposes of majority of those likely to buy it. I highly recommend this product.

  • Part 3: Section 1: MIDI controllers

Long live software instruments! Gone are the days when you needed a stack of keyboards to create tunes, as everything can now be done inside your computer at the click of a mouse. However, do you really want to be playing all of that software with a mouse? Wouldn’t you rather be doing it all with a proper piano type keyboard? Eh? So doesn’t that mean a return to piles of keyboard again, the very thing that software replaced? No! All you need is one keyboard to control every soft instrument you own! So you’d better make sure it’s a good one, right? Yes, and fortunately, or unfortunately depending on your viewpoint, there are loads of different sorts to choose from so we will discuss all of them here. And if you already own a keyboard but need extra control, don’t worry, because in Section 2 we’ll be looking at some keyboardless controllers that will enhance your desktop music making no end…
