Live has been a favorite of electronica and remix artists for both stage and studio work, and Ableton has been building towards attracting a wider audience. The latest version, Live 6, may be the biggest upgrade in its history, opening the doors for a much wider group of users to take advantage of its creative power. Live 6 boasts several performance-boosting features that allow Live to integrate seamlessly into a variety of music production and post-production tasks.
Added in version 6:
Quick Time Support
Arguably the biggest new feature in Live 6 is the ability to import QuickTime files into Live sessions with drag-and-drop ease. The audio portion of the clip can be processed like you'd process any other audio file. Support for video has been one of the most requested features, and its realization opens Live up for broader use by film scorers and commercial composers.
Support for Muliple and Multi-core Processors
Live was one of the first to jump feet-first into the Universal Binary platform, and Live 6 takes it a step further. Now users with multiple processors and multiple-core processors will experience a dramatic increase in performance. In Live 5, Ableton introduced Clip Freeze, which creates and plays back sample files for all clips in the track, preserving CPU. New in Live 6, Deep Freeze expands the Clip Freeze function by allowing you to edit, copy, paste, duplicate, cut, and trim sections, as well as add automation. Deep Freeze will also render virtual instrument tracks into audio tracks.
New Essential Instrument Collection
The boxed version of Live 6 adds a new Essential Instrument Collection. This assortment of new instruments covers everything from classic pianos to plucked instruments to simulated choirs. The multi-gigabyte library of sounds is from the SONiVOX (formerly Sonic Implants) premium collections and integrates seamlessly into Live 6 using the included Simpler instrument. On the creation side of things, Live 6 also boasts instrument and Rack effects for tweaking sounds. There are very few limitations when working within a Rack - you can have parallel device chains, VST/AU plug-ins, and even other Racks. Any number of effects, plug-ins, Racks, or instruments can be utilized inside a single Rack. To get you started, Ableton included several preset Rack configurations ranging from synthesis to mastering. Your favorite custom settings can be easily saved with drag-and-drop ease.
Improved Processing Tools
Finally, Live 6 brings improved processing tools to the table. EQ Eight doubles the number of previously available EQ bands and leans more toward a professional studio than its predecessor. Dynamic Tube mimics vintage tube distortion and also lets you create your own tube-flavored distortion. Saturator has been upgraded to include a user-defined waveshaper, and you can create custom distortion sounds. No matter how hard you push the Saturator, the second saturator stage prevents the signal from peaking higher than 0dB.

Ableton live 6 in a nutshell is a fully fledged and powerful music production software solution. It offers a unique interface combined with powerful tools which make the music production process fun and rewarding. In live you can easily adapt your own way of working, but essentially you get two methods for getting your stuff down to disc. These are known as arrangement view and session view. You can quickly switch between the two methods (or views) by using your tab key; which therefore promotes convenience when editing. Ableton live 6 is an unlimited audio&midi multitrack which means that you can have as many tracks as your computer can handle. The freeze feature is useful, especially when cpu loads are particularly high. This allows you to \'freeze\' a track containing audio&data and render it down to an audio file whilst seemingly keeping live open, and the same can be done for midi/vst channels. Ableton live 6 is realtime software making realtime automations accessible for almost every parameter within the interface. Want to record an automation of a device or instrument for detailed editing? live lets you do it. Record some tweaking and it\'s right there as you left it. Session view provides a great way for sketching down your ideas or building complex components of an eventually polished production. You can setup logical \'scenes\'/clips and name them for your convenience. These can all be triggered in realtime. You can make detailed edits and fine tune each clip or track component.
Arrangement view is elegant and follows the same principles as a traditional linear sequencer (where your working across and seeing your recordings in realtime as they happen). This is where I do most of my editing, infact you can easily do all the work in live without the need for any other sequencer if you wish. Live includes vst support which favours live even more. This allows you to intergrate vst instruments&mastering effects, or just about any vst compliant software you know of. Live offers many good tools for advanced or fine tuned productions. Warp is fantastic.
The sound quality in live is very good alot of the time. The actual performance of the program is good most of the time, but there have been some major instances where live has crashed on me. Live includes tons of good effects (Eq\'s,Compressors,Reverbs,Delays etc) plus good racks to add some flavour to your work. This is an application you can keep open 100% of the time. Everything you need is right there. The libraries are good for instant access to all things from samples to projects and devices.
All in all Ableton live 6 is a fully fledged powerful and very capable production package. You can build and finish the entire product in live without the need for any other production package. You will have alot of fun and results using it.
