Tascam Portastudio's digital sibling has arrived and it's just as easy to use as the original analogue cassette version.

Well I ordered this item from Dolphin the day before yesterday, recieved in via FedeX yesterday - and have got to grips with it all in less than a day and I'm normally a bit of a techno-numpty.
This pocketstudio is very compact - but is solid and has all the knobs and whistles I need to do multitrack recording to CD quality. The two stereo built-in microphones (the main reason I bought this over the Boss Micro BR which doesn't have a stereo microphone at all) work great! The USB conection was plug and play - no software downloads needed etc.
All in all, it does what it says on the box except for one thing. It's just a little too large for any of my pockets ;) And one more thing...make sure you get the power adapter - the batteries that came with mine have already run out.

Tascam 2488 Neo Digital Portastudio
Tascam 2488 Neo Digital Portastudio
The Tascam 2488neo is a 24-track, 24-bit recorder, sporting eight mic inputs. The Tascam 2488neo is one of the few recorders able to record and mix a full band. A batch of mastering effects joins the reverb, amp simulation, compression and EQ processing to create and burn finished-sounding CDs in a stand-alone unit. With TASCAM's simple interface, great-sounding preamps and…

First of all I feel it's worth a mention that the delivery time for this item was only two (working) days, which is impressive. Nice one Dolphin. now we come to the mixer itself, which feels and looks quite old school, which we have come to expect from Tascam. Overall build quality is pretty good. Faders feel a little cheap but for the price tag this is to be expected. Swithched it on, everything worked fine, so far so good. Then came he nasty business of hooking it up to he PC. Now I should explain if you have a 64 bit OS ie vista or win 7 his thing may not work well at all unless you download he current drivers from Tascam. In my case it did not work at all with the Cubase LE provided, despite all my best efforts and nearly a week of tinkering the connection just crashed my brand new PC every time. Instead I have reverted to using an older PC running windows XP which works fine. (I also have a friend a friend who runs one of these with garageband on a mac and has had no problems). The sound is very clear, with no hiss a all and the connection seems to run very smoothly, although I have only had six channels running simultaneously. It is also worth pointing out that I have not yet found a way of sending the onboard FX to the PC, although Cubase has ample. The controls are intuitive, simple to use, although individual mute/solo buttons on channel strips would have been nice. Overall then, this is a bargain for anyone with a home studio or for rehearsal spaces and is ideal for live recordings as it is reasonably portable and will plug straight into a laptop and a feed off the sound desk. Could well be a little tricky o set up but once you're there it's great. Hope this helps,
Mick

Excellent value for money, clear noiseless sound, simple quick USB driver install works instantly with cubase 5 essential and the cubase LE supplied does not require a manual as simple and intuitive to use. No issues plugging and un-plugging the USB while powered. It's really good that is doesn't need and external power supply, it means it's ideal for a laptop and portable music recording. With the supplied software you can be up and recording within a few minutes, I tried this on windows XP, WIndows XP 64 bit and Vista with no issues.

First of all, this thing looks amazing sitting in the control room! Not to compact, but not to large. The unit is built well and is pleasing on the eyes. I am really pleased with how the rear inputs are setup. Easy to access and keeps the wire clutter out of site. There are so many routing options on this console, I love it. At first, they can be a little difficult to understand, but once you have the process learned it's fairly easy to route and reroute. I would rate the preamps at about a 8. Probably a little better and cleaner when compared to other boards in this price range. There is a tiny hint of digital harshness, but can be EQ'd out fairly easily The Compressor, EQ, and Limiter are also very functional and the presets are pretty usable. The effects processors are decent. Mainly the reverbs, but a few of the Tascam effects aren't too bad. I have heard several people saying the DM-3200 is tricky to navigate, but after spending some time behind the faders it becomes second nature. I am using the IF/FW Card for transfering audio between the console and computer, which is kind of a pain to get running, so I would recommend using the MOTU MK3, giving you the 24 channels through TDIF and 8 more analog channels. That would be recording heaven! Overall the console was an excellent addition to my studio. I love the way it looks, I love the way it sounds, and I love the way it feels. I just wish Tascam would make the manuals a little more informative!
