An Amateur Review of the SE2000
J Briggs (November 21, 2011)Rating: 8/10
I have two of these. One arrived in a nice wooden box and the other in a cardboard box. They are both slightly different lengths but sound the same. Both came with a shockmount.
In an amateur jam session, both behaved very well and sounded good on both vocals and acoustic guitar. Good quality for the price but they would never beat a real pro like an AKG 414.
Also take a look at the SE X1, which is not too dear, looks good, highly regarded and can come bundled with the Reflexion Studio filter.

Drawing on the massive success of the industry standard Reflexion Filter, sE have released a new entry level version in response to a raft of cheap and ineffective imitations coming from OEM brands onto the market. Project Studio Reflexion Shield
Dave Beeston (February 23, 2010)Rating: 9/10
I can't afford the Pro version so thought I'd give this a go. It's well made, comes with good, strong, mounting kit and it’s very light so your mic stand won’t fall over! Only minor criticisms are that the mic mount could be better as bottom entry mic leads foul slightly, also would have been good if the mounting rod slid into the body for transportation.
The difference it makes to vocals is unbelievable, so clear and dry, with a more punchier edge and without the sound reflections I normally get when recording at home. Vocals seem to sit better in the mix and give an overall nearer "Pro" sound - even with me singing!!
For better isolation, grab the quilt off the bed and hang over the back of a door - stick your mic with shield in front and sing away - the shield performs well on its own, but this seems to work better.
Overall, a top product that any home project studio would welcome
Dave

Brilliant

I bought this about 2 weeks ago and haven't stopped using it since. I've used it to record a few vocal tracks for a few projects and to do a voice over for a radio advert both of which came out superbly due to the quality of the mic.
It has a weight to it but this shows how well built it is.
I can't fault this microphone in any way.
You'll struggle to find a better microphone for the money & at £77.50 its a bargain too.

This is incredible condenser microphone for this price. I live in ex-soviet country "Kazakhstan" and we do not have so many music stores as in UK. Before SE2200a I didn`t know anything about this microphone and even brand. The only thing I was buying was a "hope". I tried to record my voice and it sounds like £1000 microphone. It gives very pleasant, clean and brilliant sound. Actually this kind of mic should be more expensive than actual price.

For £170 this is a stunning quality mic. And The fact that it comes with a flight case and cradle just takes the biscuit. Im usung the SE Electronics SE2200a to record jazz / folk flute straight into a MicPort Pro usb portable mic preamp to laptop at home and am getting results that any top end recording studio would be proud of. This is a revelation for me. I have been sessioning for many years in studios and messing around with a home studio but this is the first time ive had a set up at home that i would be happy to use to produce a pro recording. All my other mics mixers and pre amps have been binned.

I could not beleive the quality of this microphone for the price.
I play violin/cello and do orchestral strings arrangements, and wanted a mic for my own home recording needs.i.e. for use with Cubase 5.Using this with an Edirol UA-25EX USB interface the performance in opinion is outstanding.I have been recorded over the years with all types of mikes, but this one is equally as good.My advice to anybody wanting a top class recording of acoustic instruments, don't be put off by the price !

My premise was sinple.
To find a condenser microphone, (Best for vocals) withing a tight budget that helps add a quality feel to vocal snipets in my tracks.
Knowing that SE make fantastic microphones was a good start and seeing that the cost was accurate for this device was another very good starter.
Not knowing a large amount of technical data about microphone design I have to say, for me didn't prove a problem and feel I made the perfect choice for my project studio,
The solid feel, weight and finish is brilliant, and the sound fantastic, when moving up from a dynamic microphone, I could hear everything in the studio loud and clear.
I can't fault what I can't compare with this mic, but if your needs are anything like my own, regarding experimental vocals, acoustic snipets or anything else regarding basic audio input.
Then this should fit that need perfectly.

Stuart Roberts (September 1, 2009)Rating: 9/10
This mic is brilliant! AND it's cheap! The wooden box it comes in is a little strange and pointless, but the mic itself is fantastic.
I used to have an SE 2200A which is better, but for my situation it was too good - it was way too sensitive and picked up far too many unwanted noises (and it was £100 more!). The SE2000 is warm and clear. With the high pass on, it's sharp, although could be better, but hey - £77.50! Can't complain.

I had one of these delivered last week from Dolphin's. Best price on the net. This is my first condenser. It is well built, feeling nice an weighty, comes with a flight style case and a shock-mount (with spare elastic). There is also an extra years warranty for registering it via SE's website which means 3 years in total.
It knocks the socks off anything in its price range and IMHO you need to spend well over double to get to the "next level". So far I have used it on an acoustic guitar. It has a lovely, neutral voice without being harsh. Not sure if links are allowed but have a listen www.markyguitar.co.uk .
May I also say that Dolphin's mail order is really efficient and items arrived when they said they would the next day - good work fellas!

se reflexion filter! lol it really works
ayo (April 14, 2009)Rating: 9/10
i am just about to buy one of these reflexion filter from se electronics i have just tried it out in a studio and it is amazing.
naturally i am a bit skeptical and didn't think that this filter would work properly or it would be a bit of hit and miss but it is not. i was literally laughing out loud when i heard my recording with and without it. The vocal is actually dry and clearer.
Because of the way the product stands up it doesn't take up too much space and can be packed away, it is very sturdy too!
The only reason why i haven't given it 10 out of 10 is because i don't think that it will block reflections comming from behind the singer and so it will never be as good as a real vocal booth.
In short:
I comes pretty close to the real thing and it is great for what it is.

SE Z3300a large condenser
Chris Martin (April 8, 2009)Rating: 9/10
I have purchased an SE Z3300a microphone as a multi-purpose microphone for various recording scenario's. Although it is usually used primarily for recording vocals, I have found that this particular model works extremely well when used to record acoustic guitars and mandolins.
When using the SE to record vocals, I have found that the results lack definition in the upper ranges of about 12-13Khz and above. However, it does produce excellent clarity and even response overall, especially in the low-mid's and low ends.
When I used it to record some acoustic instruments for a folk album, the best results came from the acoustic guitar and mandolin. I tested the mic against two small diaphragm condenser's, which were set up in an AB pattern. I found that this captured the low-mid's and the high's very well, but I wasn't satisfied with the overall sound combined. I used the SE mic on it's own as a comparison, placed about 1 foot away from the sound hoe and set up with the low end roll-off engaged. The results were much cleaner and well defined than the two small condenser mic's. To my surprise, it also picked up a lot of the subtle fretboard movements and high-end fret buzz, whilst still retaining the overall presence and rich, warm characteristics of the guitar.
The only negative aspects of this microphone that I have found, are that the polar pattern, db cut and roll-off switches don't seem to be as sturdy as other microphones of similar designs.
For the price of the SE, I would definitely recommend it as a good quality multi-purpose microphone that offers excellent results.
