A great bit of kit!

Ben Collins (November 9, 2009)
Rating: 9/10

Looking back at the KP-1, I think it's a brilliant achievement on Korg's behalf to have produced such a great franchise based on the single, original X/Y pad. The KP-3 is even better than its predecessors as a high-end effects processor, with a much better sampling capability (in my opinion), and of course the long-standing MIDI control! One thing that stopped this product from getting the full 10 was the even more advanced complexity of the product, somewhat of a double edged sword. I world recommend this to any pro DJ!

This, quite simply, the best pedal tuner available right now. The biggest thing I look for in a tuner is speed - there's nothing more annoying than waiting for a tuner to detect the right note, except perhaps when it flicks between two different notes and jumps from in tune to sharp to flat and back again. This tuner is FAST and shows the correct note and tuning indication every time. It works as a conventional tuner but can also be switch to simulate a strobe tuner if you prefer. The 'true' bypass is very good and totally transparent. The whole unit it built like a tank and will take serious amounts of abuse. Buy it. Now.

Korg D888

Stephen Gard (October 10, 2009)
Rating: 8/10

I've owned my Korg D888 for over a year now, and used it on several occasions. I usually record live music: orchestral, choral, chamber, acoustic, but last year I was asked to record a friend's terribly loud blues trio, too. So the unit has had a real workout!

I'm very pleased with it: up until the Day of the Korg, I used a four channel mixer and a DAT: suddenly, 8 channels and the chance to remix it all later with Pro Tools are mine. Looxury!

The Korg does everything it promises and does it well; read the specs and be impressed. Six hours of recording time is heaps for my purposes. I don't use the on-board FX, but I have fiddled with these to see what they do, and they are quite satisfactory. I haven't tried to edit in the machine, either, but a quick squiz at the book of words gave me no qualms. The manual is in English-English, uninflected by other syntaxes. Nice. I had the unit running to my satisfaction in less than 15 minutes. As ever, read the flippin' manual; that's what it's for - flippin'.

The Korg D888's operation is quite straightforward, and speaking as one who shuns not only bells, but also whistles, its simplicity amounts to elegance.

Two quibbles. The first; it has a terrifying habit of taking a terribly long time to write the recorded material to its internal hard disc drive, once one hits the STOP button. If you do this at interval, midway through a one hour concert, it means that you may miss the opening number of the second half, as I did once, while the Korg was busy number-crunching. What is more alarming is that this behaviour in problematical (i.e. unpredictable); on other occasions after a longish session, the D888 wrote the files in fifteen SECONDS. If I could spot a pattern (e.g. long session = long file-write time follows) I'd feel calmer, but as yet there doesn't seem to be one. Perhaps it's still young, and formatting yet uncharted areas of its HDD?

Second quibble, there is very little headroom in the channel trimpots. They must be set at 8.9 or 9 out of 10 to produce a decent level from even my most expensive mics. (Neumann KM183s) and so I've had to add a preamp to the input chain: a nuisance live - yet more gear to lug and set up and test...

When I'm not working live, I use the Korg D888 to record final mixdowns out of my Pro Tools set-up: all eight channels of the DIGI003 can be output at once. Cool bananas.

Lasty micro-quibble: connect the Korg to your PC (a Mac man, me) and its icon does not always immediately appear on your desktop, which can cause cardiac arrest. I fixed this by using the Mac's System Profiler, and it soon found the Korg.

Still, every piece of gear I've ever owned has its quirks, and the Korg as as quirk-free as one can hope. I'd buy another at once if mine ever was deducted from my studio by some tea-leaf, or I dropped it, or spilled a chalice of burgundy into its vitals.

Korg Blimey, it's a little ripper, as we say in Oz.

Excellent Piano and Service

Ordered this piano for uni since my friend had the same brand. She had trouble with Amazon, but Dolphin Music were fantastic. There was such a good level of customer support with help and advice every step of the way. Piano came really quickly too, shipped by private courier. Would benefit from better speakers, but for the price and the weight there are no complaints I can make.

Korg SP-250

Catherine (September 9, 2009)

I purchased the Korg SP-250 Digital piano through Dolphin Music on 25th August. I previously had a Yamaha keyboard but wanted something more professional and authentic sounding to play at wedding services after being told my Yamaha sounded a bit 'tinny!'. I also just wanted something I would enjoy playing.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase. The weighting of the keys is excellent and the keyboard has 3 touch response options to suit different playing styles- allowing for a wide range of dynamics. It also comes with an excellent pedal and stand so allows for very expressive playing.

The sound quality is top notch. In particular the tonality of the main grand piano sound is quite dark and 'base-y' and very rich both in top and lower notes. Organ sounds are also excellent.

Basically it is the whole package and at a very reasonable price too.

My only criticism is that it is not as portable as I had hoped. It is an 88 key keyboard and quite heavy so I am also having to invest in a carry case on wheels to take it to weddings. It's either that or a roadie.. :) Also, I haven't quite worked out how to transpose yet but I will get there..!

Overall I'd give it 9/10 and wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

I bought one of these after auditioning several other keyboards in the same price bracket and others that were significantly more expensive.

Its wonderfully weighted with great sounds all packaged up in a sturdy and very attractive body.

The bundled stand, pedals and music stand are all consistently high quality.

As both a digital piano for live and home use there is nothing that can match it pound for pound.

Excellent product

Lyndon Jones (July 28, 2009)
Rating: 10/10

I think think this product is excellent it work really well with reason, logic along with pro-tools 8 it is simple to use light small and cosmetically stunning.
The pads have a good solid feel and as long as its on a solid surface you can really pound away without it moving at all. The X/Y pad has a good response and works as expected. You can customize how the pad works with various response curves, attack and release times inside the free midi editor librarian. This program allows you to further customize all the note values and scenes so that there are no conflicts with your current midi controller.
My main feature for this is ezdrummer which it works amazingly with and you can download the presets from the korg website.

Cool Instrument! - Just make sure u know what you want to do with it!!!

DC (July 17, 2009)
Rating: 7/10

Ok. The Kaossilator is, to look at, extremely cool and will get people curious, but my experience is mixed.

Good:
-Looks cool (come on its important!)
-good quality sounds (mainly in the electronica genre) some GREAT basses and leads
-can be interesting if you link it up to some other fx processor
-can actually be quite inspiring playing with the loop function

Bad:
-would like a MIDI out so i can use the touchpad to control external sounds
-no quantizing. im not blessed with perfect rhythm and although there are present drum loops, some kind of simple quantize function would be nice
-control layout isnt great for right handed people! (see on youtube people reaching round to press the loop record button you'll see what i mean)
-XY pad is quite sensitive: dont expect to be able to play a nice little melody on this thing. it has a 2/3 octave range (i think)so aiming for an exact note is tricky

So yes its a cool instrument (not a toy by any means), but Its no kaoss pad - so let it be itself and you can have a lot of fun!!

Wow..have to say I am most impressed with this machine. Still getting used to it but it's very intuitive and easy to get started. I'm just a little slow on the uptake sometimes with this but once I've got it then it's easy to remember how to do it again ie. it's very clever ad i'm stupid :-) Some fantastic pre-set sounds too, and i was particularly looking for something that could change sounds at the click of a foot-switch mid-tune and although i haven't figured it out yet i believe this will do it (and give up to 8 sequences), like i said i'm slow...but impressed.

Mark Kershaw (April 22, 2009)

I've had the Kontrol for a few months now and am finding it more and more enjoyable to use as I learn more about it. I use Pro Tools 8 and for a while I thought it would only be useful with the midi learn capabilities. However, now, having managed to find a template to fit, I can now control all aspects of Pro Tools (transport, virtual mixer, plug ins, etc) from the nano kontrol as a 'midi controller' in Pro Tools, and this has opened up the possibilities no end. The 'scenes' allow for controls to be mapped in a variety of different ways and the knobs and faders are a reasonable build (for the price!) The knobs are limited in that the have a set range, rather than being on an endless cycle (like most controllers around at the moment). Having said that, this is only a minor set back. Is also really useful with Ableton when DJing as you can make the various buttons to stop/start play back, activate plug ins, automate effects, etc.

At £50, you can't really as for me.

Spot on.

Horses for courses, if your a keyboard player it may not be for you , however its small light an does the trick , I use reason and it certainly beats messing around with a matrix to get a tune out , the build aint the strongest, but for the price I think its cool ,quite impressed with the mod and pitch buttons, realy simple to use, all in all it fills the gap for a midi keyboard thats small and light and fits in your laptop bag , work on the build korg and it would be tops , best thing Ive bought sinse reason .

SERRATO SCRATCH LIVE USERS THIS IS FOR YOU!

alejandro (March 25, 2009)
Rating: 10/10

Great Product Excellent Price, Small and easy to take around, the cosmetics are beautiful, and its got great functionality I have been using it with ableton live to trigger some drum loops and high hats and but the reason why a got it is because I wanted something portable to be used with RANE/SERATO SCRATCH LIVE to store cue points for the right and left decks and tempo cues that I store in scene 1 just perfect 12 pads available, just what I needed, in scene 2 I stored loops for the right and left deck 10 pads and stored two pads for navigation and loading and unloading and I use the pad to move in the library, tracks 12 pads required and 12 available, in scene 3 I got 9 auto loops for the right deck and in scene 4 got 9 auto loops for the left deck, much better than having to take a midi keyboard around, and is much cheaper than the m audio trigger finger.

I got this gadget for Xmas after LOTS of hinting. So I've been anticipating it for months, wondering if it could really be as good as it promised. After all, it's not just small in size, it's small in cost too, so corners have to have been cut somewhere, right? It would turn out incompatible or something frustrating? Not a bit of it. I plugged it straight into my MacBook, downloaded the driver, booted GarageBand, created a drum track and tapped the pads – brilliant, velocity-sensitive drum patterns erupted - and it apparently controls samples and DJ stuff too! Class gizmo. My only quibble is that my Pad has a rattle from a stray bit of plastic or something in the casing, which just nudges the owner experience just off perfect (no 10th star), which means I'll have to go swap to get that perfection – who said anal?

It has Midi In and out and the vocoder is high quality!

A superb production, worthy to be used by the likes of Gary Numan, Duran Duran, Japan etc

Very, very good

(August 21, 2008)
Rating: 9/10

It is early days for me with this machine, but so far it has behaved flawlessly.

Recording eight tracks of audio simultaneously during a band rehearsal was pretty straightforward even after a fairly brief canter through the manual. The menu system sometimes feels a little fiddly (hence 9 out of 10), but getting used to the quirks didn't take too long at all.

But uploading the audio onto the Mac to edit and mix in Logic Express was just a sheer pleasure. Plug in a USB cable, copy the directory across, drag and drop into Logic Express and you are ready to start mixing -- eight tracks of audio right there, waiting to be edited.

Very nice feature set, copious hard drive, pretty straightforward and is smart enough to not try to replicate the feature set of DAW software and thereby make the machine way too complicated. I like this a lot.
