Adam A5X Active Studio Monitor Pair Reviews
In this review I concentrate on buying choice and out of the box experience.
This was a choice between the Adam A5X and Genelec 8020B but also in the price range I considered e.g. Yamaha 80HSM, KRK VXT 4 & 6, Mackie HR624mk2. I have experience of KRK VXT 8, Mackie HR824 & NS10s. My priorities were firstly music production requirements/music style, room size then budget. I felt the larger 8" speakers would be too much in my room and I tend to write acoustic to jazz/rock and prefer a lot of mid/top detail with the bass to be light 'n' tight. The VXT8's are very 'flat' to my ears and the HR824s too aggressive (although both very good!). If I was thinking more commercial/dance/metal I would definitely consider the larger AX7/Mackie/VXT/Genelec 8030's for bass extension.
Compared to the A5Xs The 8020s have reportedly a bit more bass than the A5Xs but not so much detail. The 8020s are only 20watts and the A5xs 50w. The Yamaha's are reportedly a bit too mid-forward.
In use, the A5Xs have very good stereo imaging and smooth response. They are certainly not lacking in bass which sounds nicely controlled in my setup. Mids and highs are detailed, but not aggressive or tiring. A number of bass, balance and mode problems immediately jumped out at a first listening which is good! Volume wise they are plenty loud with only a hint of noise creeping in at high volumes. They've also completely stopped some nasty, digital 'zipper' interference I was getting from my old setup so I'm delighted with that!
There are pots to adjust lo/hi shelving and tweeter room balance, a power/clip LED. balanced and unbalanced phone/xlr i/p to the rear and a stereo link allowing both speaker volumes to be controlled from one speaker volume control.
True, they aren't going to have the tingle-inducing effect of Genelec 1038s but they are over £4000! All in all, excellent value for the money and I'm very pleased with them. Hope this review helps you.
