Sontronics Sigma Ribbon Microphone Reviews
I found the Sontronics Sigma Ribbon microphone to be just magic. As soon as it arrived I was eager to get hold of it, and see how it sounded. The velvet case it was beautifully enbedded in, is a great touch (mind the pun!) to start the experience off. Taking the mic out of the velvet case I was pleasantly suprised by how much lighter it was than I'd expected from handling other ribbon mics. I found the semi-circular shock mount unique looking but slightly cumbersome at first.
So I plugged in the mic to my digi 001 mic input to test it out. I didn't want to use a fancy mic pre initially, I just wanted to see how such a mic sounded through what the average punter would have (standard sound card's mic interface). Then I gave a 'la' down the mic...oh my goodness was that my voice!?! So I sang into the mic for a few minutes in pure bliss, just enjoying the sound in my headphones (DT100's). Then decided to record a take for the latest song I was working on. True to their word the distinctive ribbon sound was in my home studio. No fancy convertors or pre-amps, just bog standard no frills gear, and what a sound! I tell you something aswell I'm not sure whether its a result of how darn good the sound in my headphones was compared to my other modest mics (akg c414, sm58), but I swear I had to only do 2 takes to get 'the take' which would normally have been 7 takes or more to have been as satisfied with other mics.
I then used the fancy gear in the recording studio I work in to test the mic out. It went through the Avalon vt737 pre amp, into the Neve desk, then into the digidesign 192 i/o convertors, straight to pro tools. Words cannot put into place this delightful combination! The studio owner was there whilst this mic test went on, and was so impressed and shocked at the price, that he immediately got on the phone to his equipment dealer and ordered 2! I presumed he wanted a back-up incase one broke but he corrected me, telling me it was to hear their beauty in coincident micing. Can't wait to hear it!
I am a fan of the vocal sound of 'swing' recordings. I feel they're so 'warm' and 'real' but ribbon's of the quality Louis Armstrong used must be way above many of our budgets! But the Sontronics Sigma Ribbon mic is absolutely a steal for its quality and price range. Bargain and a half I reckon, but hey that's just me (and my boss's), and I love ribbon mics. I recommend this product 100% and give it a 9 out of 10 rating.
