Rode VideoMic Reviews
A great value video mic to complement the Canon EOS 5D Mark 2. Unsurprising a noticeable improvement over the built in microphone.
I have been using the rode video mic for about a year and a half on independent film shoots and on the whole, you cant beat it for the price, it does however have some fairly serious issues.
My set up is the rode video mic recording to a zoom H4 with some modifications to both the H4 and the mic.
In terms of sound it is excellent for the price. Used with a bit of knowledge and a good pre amp you can get excellent recordings even in noisy environments. The microphone has survived a HUGE amount of punishment, including being used in rough seas shooting from one boat to another.
The biggest issue by far is the handling noise, I thought my shock mount was dodgy but it seems in fact the capsule inside the microphone bangs against the body of the microphone. This is not as bad as it sound, if you keep your movements slow you can avoid this most of the time. Also after a while the bands for the shockmount get creaky and you have to replace them, however its difficult to find replacement bands in the UK. Instead i built my own new shock mount for it.
The other major problem is forgivable however as it effects all TRS cables, the TRS connection can brake fairly easily, also TRS cables do not handle electrical interference very well.
After replacing the TRS connection many times I eventually decided to solder a new XLR cable to the end. Which solved these problems.
I love the flexibility of this mic however. In cramped spaces you can ditch your boom pole and hold it like a gun by the hot-shoe mount. It can also be attached to a camera, in-fact one camera man I work with was so impressed he bought one for his camera. I even used it to record ADR by screwing it onto a mic stand when we were to pressed for time to get a studio.
To summerise, while this is not a perhaps a \"Pro\" microphone, it can be used to GREAT effect. And since on a whole independent film makers are strapped for cash it has been a godsend for me. However It has a few problems that I would like to see rode iron out for the next version.
Using this mic on a small canon HV20, good improvement on build-in mic, however more noisy in windy situation.
Very good price for an entry level mic. Makes the sound much more vivid and therefore makes a nicer movie to watch.
