AD 30 VT
I got mine to try it out, with intention of returning it to the shop in a couple of days, but almost a year later I'm still carrying it round to teaching and smaller gigging venues, the sounds from this light to carry amp covers evrything I need, folk rock to metal sessions. The AC 30 setting and "neck pickup" sounds so very Hendrix/Marshal. No need for pedals, just the standard Vox "channel switcher", which gives three different channels, 2 presets and a efffects "or" presets bypass.
This smallish 30 watter has persuaded me to get the AD 100 VT as well, which has a "massive" sound and to my wifes disgust, the VOX AD series has reborn me (at 57 years)to growing my hair again, but its thin and grey these days.
Good'n Vox!
The joy of beautiful, but affordable tone.
Very rarely, companies get it right. "Getting it right" basically means making a product that does what it's supposed to do, for a price that people can afford, to a very high quality. Very rarely, a company will design a completely new type of product. Very, VERY rarely, Vox will invent the Valvetronix. This amplifier is a completely new form of amplifier. Traditionally, there are the three classes of amp. All valve, all Solid-State, or a hybrid, with a valve preamplifier, and a solid state power amplifier. The AD30 and others from the same range, are completely new, because they implement a completely digital pre-amplifier, run it through a very small valve power amplifier containing a 12AX7 tube, and then use another solid state system to amplify this.
What this basically achieves, is a fully configurable modelling amplifier, with a real valve power amp sound. All 11 presets are very useable, as are all the effects, which are well programmed, and simulate top class units from the real world of Valve amps and boutique effects. The clean effects are clean, with just enough power to start to crunch at the top end. The dirty effects range from mild crunch to full metal distortion, and any combination can be stored in one of the two footswitchable channels. Included are the two famous vox amps, the AC15, and AC30 Top Boosted, which are extremely well emulated, with all the original warmth and sparkle.
The only real disadvantage of the AD30VT is that it is rather picky with Fuzzboxes and distortion pedals, some, like the TS808 Tubescreamer, work well, my Boss DS-1 is a little less functional with this combo. With the footswitch and preprogrammable sounds, It's not what I'd call a big loss, considering that you gain the sound that this amp gives.
Although for some the 30 watts may be on the quiet side, and for these people 50 and 100 watt versions are manufactured, the amp is certainly loud enough for small venues, and maybe for larger situations via the built in DI-Out (Complete with Speaker simulation) and the PA system.
For the rougher side of gigging, this particular combo is very well designed. The kickproof grille stops accidental damage, and the cabinet itself is thick, well built ply, with a good staple of guitar amp manufacturers, black tortex as protection. The corners are also neatly bound with plastic guards, and everything is held in place with solid steel bolts. It's probably not going to die on your first trip out of the house.
All in all, you'd have difficulty doing better for £100 more than the price being asked, a best buy if ever I bought one. (Which, incidentally, I did.)
