Near Field Monitoring Speakers.

The Reveal 5A active near field monitor builds upon the success and recording industry reputation of the famous original Tannoy Reveal Active. When launched in the mid nineties, the Reveal Active was widely recognised as the product that defined the category and has been the active monitor of choice for thousands of amateur and professional recording, creative composition and postproduction facilities worldwide.

Whether you’re building a studio on a budget, or you just need an active monitor with a small footprint, the Reveal 5A is your choice. Built to the same high standard as the rest of the Reveal line, the R5A packs performance, accuracy and value into a compact enclosure that’s ready to share the desktop with the rest of your gear. Priced right for the beginner, the R5A delivers WideBand™ performance that will impress even the most seasoned pro.

From the front

The 40mm MDF baffle is stiff, heavy and rigid, with the drive units are recessed flush to the sculpted surface to minimise diffraction, while 10 countersunk fixing screws maximise contact between drive unit and baffle. Bass unit development using Klippell™ analysis equipment has minimised offsets and linearised the suspension components.

The wide bandwidth tweeter extends the amplitude response beyond the 20kHz audibility threshold to 30kHz to correct the phase response from 8kHz to 14kHz within the audible band. This preserves the harmonic structure of sounds and the stability of the stereo image. The smooth tweeter faceplate contours prevent diffraction and cavity effects.

An On/Mute (energy saving mode) switch is activated by pressing the Tannoy logo and an LED indicator displays the Active/Energy Saving modes. A front mounted volume control is provided for convenient Home Studio and PC/MAC laptop/desktop use.

From the sides

The 18mm MDF cabinet construction provides stiffness and minimises colouration, while internal bracing of the sides and rear against the back of the bass driver provides a rigid reactive mass for the moving cone assembly; this ensures fast tight bass response and clear midrange. The front baffle and rear panel are tongued and grooved into the cabinet as a mechanical interlock for safety if wall mounted.

From the rear

The amplifier module is double insulated to prevent ground loops, no safety earth required, and CSA/CE/CCC/CB full safety approvals, including China, have been secured. There is a spare fuse in IEC mains connector as well as an On/Off mains isolator switch, substantial heat sinking for long term cool running and 24/7 reliability and an XLR and ¼” jack Combi connector for balanced input.

Drive Units

With the Reveal 5A, the cabinet is now smaller and has been further braced and refined to provide the most rigid platform possible for the new driver design. Securely attached to the solid baffle, with no less than 10 hex socket countersunk-head screws, the all-new 130mm (5.00") bass driver performs with significantly reduced distortion.

Magnetic circuit flux control rings and extensive Klippell™ based symmetry analysis has made performance improvement possible, with the new driver providing tight, punchy and controlled bass response with a clean and open mid range for superb vocal intelligibility.

Open and detailed reproduction of mid-high frequencies is further enhanced by inclusion of a 25mm (1.00") soft dome high frequency unit, a WideBand™ driver taking the frequency response out to 30kHz to improve and extend the high frequency phase response. This ensures increased tonal accuracy of individual instruments in the reproduction process - a mix critical factor allowing the best EQ and placement decisions to be made.

Tannoy Reveal 5A - Pair Reviews

Tannoy Reveal 5A

— Dave October 16, 2008

I have had these monitors for a few months now and they are definitely the best thing I have purchased in a long while. they are extremely sturdy they have a lovely finish, the sound fantastic when the volume is down low but they are still capable of shaking all the walls in the house when I turn the volume up... I am deducting one point only because i would prefer if the front button would turn the monitor off rather than put it in a stand-by state, but to conclude I think they have lived up to their review from musicTech mag, and the seem like the kind of thing that will last forever...

Tannoy Reveal 5A

— Andrew Burke April 10, 2006

I have owned a pair of reveal 5A's for approximately 2 months now. I use them in a very small (box room 2m x 3m) home studio. I use these monitors to write electronic dance music (I know, yet another. Before purchasing the reveal 5A's I was considering the Yammaha MSP3's and the MSP5's also, the Samson Resolv 50A's or the 40A's

Tannoy Reveal 5A

— Mr E Clarke February 26, 2006

Ordered these late Friday afternoon. They went out same day, over the weekend I tracked the parcel via my online account login and link to the couriers, and I got the delivery first thing on Monday morning - that's what I call customer service, thanks guys!!

Tannoy is a name that speaks for itself. When you buy a Tannoy product you are buying into a heritage that dates back seventy years. The Reveal 5A's in particular build upon the professional success of the Tannoy Reveal Active that was introduced in the nineties. So right from the start you know that you're not going to open the box and be disappointed by poor workmanship and amateur design. In fact Tannoy guarantee the Reveal 5A's against defective material and/or craftsmanship for a period of 5 years. That's probably for as long as most professionals will want to be using a pair of nearfields before updating and or upgrading.

Tannoy Reveal 5A's stand out above the crowd because every aspect of their design has been well thought out and their performance is fantastic. The 5A's were easy to setup, the manual (also downloadable in PDF from the Tannoy website) covers the basics of speaker placement.

During initial tests, whilst listening to some familiar music, it was quite evident that the performance capability is strongest at the 200Hz to 2KHz and 10KHz regions. Tannoy point out that you can further improve the mid-bass response by plugging the rear bass ports (see the manual for details). So as I am also using a subwoofer (set to 150Hz low pass), it made sense to plug the ports and enjoy that noticeable improvement on mid-bass response.

Having used the 5A's for over a week now, I am happy with the way they are performing and how I am fitting in around them. I think there is a give and take relationship with speakers because we all take a unique perspective on sound pressure across the spectrum. Personally I like that the 5A's have a fast tight bass response and clear midrange. And because they are designed to have very low levels of time, amplitude and frequency distortion, I am able to listen to a mix at equally low and high levels without any loss of clarity.
