Yeah the Faded SG is $699 and they go up to over $5000 for a Custom Shop model. I don't think any year is made poorly, some may feel cteiarn years are better but that's subjective. For instance I have a 2002 Faded SG. It has the ebony fretboard with crescent moon inlays and that was only done for 2 years. Many feel that was the best 2 years for the Faded model, but I seriously doubt the difference are that noticeable, yes the ebony fretboard feels a little smoother than the rosewood they use now, but a very minor difference. I'm sure there are subtle differences between other SG's from year to year but nothing worth being concerned about and it's mostly just opinion anyway. As far as how well a less expensive Gibson sounds and plays compared to a high dollar one, I personally don't think it's that big of a difference. I have a Gibson Les Paul Jr. that's less than $900 new and a Custom Shop 1960 VOS Les Paul Special (also P-90) that cost thousands of dollars. The less expensive Gibson actually sounds and plays just as good to me, although the Custom Shop does have a better "feel".References :
