Sennheiser e840
The risen under-dog.
To be fair the majority of modern microphones, in the e840's range, will give you a decent sound however you perform. Its the performance of Shure's SM58 which has somewhat shadowed Sennheiser's beautifully produced evolution collection. The somewhat understated, non-descript, simpleness of the e840 is (in my eyes) what makes this mic so useable. For vocals this mic can, and will, surprise you with its clarity and tone... but as a microphone it's more focussed than the SM. As a singing purist, the e840 just gets the sound out, no fuss, no hassle, no worries, and therefore makes it the ideal tool of choise.
You can sing with this mic and forget it's even there, allowing you to perform to your highest potential. This is why it will always be the under-dog... its no icon, but why would you want an icon, when you can have this stunningly dependable e840 in all its simplicity.
