The Sontronics HALO is an innovatively designed dynamic microphone, specifically developed for the purpose of miking up guitar amps and cabs, both in the studio or in a live environment. This strikingly designed mic builds upon the technology found with the Sontronics¡¯ popular STC-80 but is shaped to optimize capture from the source, with the addition of springs built into the smart circular design to help isolate the mic from stage or floor vibrations. Halo accurately reproduces the punch and tone and raw power from your amp without all of the extra EQ adjustments.

    Sontronics Halo

    Ok, so it\'s a chinese mic, and when it arrived it did have a less sturdy feel than i thought, the springs hold the capsule in a weak and slightly wonky way, but it\'s not too bad. Overall it\'s a great looking mic, and has character.

    Plugging it in, i first tried it on vocals, it has a strange but unique sound, quite grainy but not at all unpleasant, good for backing vocals or an effected vocals mic. Basically it has character, but an usable one. Since it\'s not its main use anyway, that\'s a nice addition. And as a live vocal mic the pics would look ace, people would thing \"wow what are they singing into?\".

    So then plugging it onto a guitar amp, an Orange AD15, and it really is a nice alternative to the SM57 cliche. It has a graininess that works on guitar, and double tracking sounded HUGE, but not so huge that it swallowed the track. Huge, but focused, with a nice tonal colour. Not as dull as an SM57, so not as boxy. It would make a welcome addition to a mix to have this different tone.

    It\'s gotta be worth the asking price. And it has that extra character, and looks ace in photos. I got Serial Number 16, which is also cool, having a low SN and a mic no one else has yet.
