Beyerdynamic DJX-1

— andrew woolf May 31, 2009

I have been a club DJ for nearly 7 years and have been through a few pairs of headphones in my time. I have been using the DJX-1’s regularly for almost a year, both at home and in venues and so far they’ve been excellent. Prior to these I had the Sennheiser HD-25\'s which seem to be the industry standard for DJ’s. However, despite their proven sound quality, the HD-25’s offered me limited sound protection due to their small ear cups. This meant that in a noisy club, I had to crank up the volume in order to hear through them in the DJ booth. With the Beyer Dynamic’s, the closed ear cup design completely covers the ear which helps to reduce the level of external noise heard, thus providing you with better protection in noisy environments. To a DJ, this means you can reduce the headphone volume on the mixer which is naturally better for your hearing. After all who wants to end up with tinnitus? As the DJX’s rest against your head, it also makes them much more comfortable to wear over long periods of time (2 hrs +).

When I’m looking to purchase a new pair of cans the nominal frequency response should ideally be between 5 - 35,000 Hz. In turn, this range will allow you to hear more bass not to mention the complete sound of the track or music that you’re listening to. Well the DJX-1’s certainly meet this criteria, while being able to handle power up to 3000 mW, meaning you music won’t sound distorted when you up the volume. These factors also make the Beyer Dynamic’s great for casual use, such as watching a film or connecting to an mp3 player. In fact, using these to listen to a film through is a definite must. Straight away you will notice additional sounds that the film maker intended you to hear, but couldn’t unless you had a home cinema surround system. For that reason, they make the whole viewing experience much more enjoyable. Their 3m cable length is ideal for DJing, however if you are going to plug these into the TV, it’s worth getting an extension lead. I bought mine from Amazon for about £3, which allows my headphones to reach all the way to the sofa, without stretching too much.

One thing I have noticed is that the DJX-1’s are not as common as the Sony MDR-V700DJ which is similar in price; however, I can assure you that the sound quality is better than the Sony, for a little extra cost. I have also owned the Pioneer HDJ - 1000 which are probably my favourite DJ headphones, unfortunately, these cans don\'t seem to last long. In fact, my last pair aged only 8 months before needing to be replaced. Yes the Pioneers definitely look and sound the part, but they don’t seem built to last and are more of a luxury item in my opinion. So far the DJX-1’s haven’t faulted and appear to be quite sturdy yet remain fairly light.

When the DJX-1’s first entered the market they retailed at around £150 which gives you some idea of their quality. In fact if you compare their specifications with other headphones in this price category they more than hold their own. As for anything under a £100, the Beyer Dynamic pretty much outperform the competition on every level. One of my favourite things about these cans is the mono/stereo switch. For the DJ this means that you can hear yourself mixing two tracks in just one ear cup. So when I’m DJing, I usually have the other ear cup placed behind my ear so I can hear my mix coming through the master channel or club speakers. Sometimes you will find that the sound coming through your headphones is a few seconds quicker than through the club speakers. Therefore, if you immediately moved the cross fader to the middle, your tracks would sound out of sync. So, if you’re new to the game, having the mono/stereo feature can really help.

Overall, if you are looking for a comfortable pair of headphones that sound great and will last a long time then these are for you. For those entering the world of DJing, spend the £100 and get yourself a pair of DJX-1\'s, not only will they help protect you hearing in the long run, but they will provide you with all the sound quality you need in order to mix at a bar/club. And for those, who don’t mind getting new cans every 1-2 years then the Pioneer HDJ – 1000’s are a must. Beyer Dynamic may not be the household name that Sony is but once you hear their sound quality, you will know why you paid the money. As for me, I don’t make my living by reviewing headphones but based on my experience’s I’m giving the Beyer Dynamic DJX-1’s 9/10, after all nothings perfect including my wife.

Beyer Dynamic DJX-1

— Adam A. January 3, 2007

Having trawled the internet on countless occasions searching for a new pair of "cans" to invest in, I came across the Beyer Dyanmic DJX-1's. I had been looking for a suitable pair of DJ headphones for use with Drum n Bass / Techno and required a solution which had excellent bass reproduction. After looking at several other headphone models including the highly reputable Sennheiser HD-25's, I decided on specification and price that these would be the optimum solution.

I ordered these headphones from dolphinmusic.co.uk as this was the cheapest price I could find online. I received my new headphones within 24 hours of ordering.

When first trying on these headphones you will probably notice that the headphone cord is on the right hand side as opposed to being on the left. This is a minor difference between the average set of headphones and it is unnoticable within a few days of use. In terms of weight and ease of use, these headphones are in the mid to heavy range. I have not struggled with the weight of these headphones since purchase and any weight issues you may have will be cancelled out by the build quality and sound quality of these headphones. Once on, these headphones will "hug" nicely to your head and when playing a track through the headphones at only low to medium levels any outside noise is indistinguishable or unhearable.

Having used these headphones for several months, they are comfortable to use and provide me with the bass and soundstage that I require. I would highly recommend these headphones to anyone!
