AT2020 review
As a first-time buyer of a condeser mic I was quite aprehensive about which microphone to choose to get a good quality sound for my small budget. Luckily I had the opportunity to try out this mic along with a few others including an AKG of double the price. To my, ill admit somewhat inexperienced ear, the two mics sounded almost identically good and there was definately not a separation of quality as much as there was in the price tag.
I bought the AT2020 for my home studio (consiting of various Behringer outboards and a small UB802 mixer and Behringer firewire interface) and use it to record acoustic guitar and vocals. The quality jump between my previous dodgy dynamic mic was amazing. The mic picks up ruffles of shirt sleeves from meters away (so much so that I now record topless!) and has a great sound for my voice. I bought the Behringer Ultravoice Digital to clean up the vocal input but have resorted to just using the mic on its own and bypassing the box as the sound was cleaner without.
I also use the AT2020 to mic up my acoustic guitar whilst playing live (using a Sennheiser dynamic for vocals). The sound it gives is crisp and clean although with my set up feedback occurs when you try and turn it up too much, although I feel this is due to my inexperience with sound engineering rather than the mic itself.
Whilst I dont pretend to have the knowledge that many music experts have, for a budding musician with a small home studio the AT2020 delivers exactly what I had wanted it to. Unlike various of my other musical purchases I have never regreted dipping into the piggy bank for this mic.
