MIDI and guitar - two different worlds until now. With the AXON AX 100 MKII, the technical problems involved in connecting electric or acoustic guitars and basses to the MIDIfied studio world are finally a thing of the past.

The ultra-fast guitar-to-MIDI controller in a single-unit rack mount has an early-recognition system which evaluates the impulses from the strings as soon as they are picked and converts them into values for pitch, dynamics and length. A 32-bit RISC processor makes it possible, opening up a whole new world of music to the guitarist.

    Never again will you have to change guitars to produce a different sound - just switch the MIDI channel. On the AXON AX100 MKII, you can either choose from over 500 internal sounds, 10 drum kits and an SFX kit or trigger external sound devices such as samplers and synthesizers. Then, depending on the sound generator you are using, a guitar can become a synthesizer, an electric piano or a saxophone. Everything is possible - even at the same time. With the 12 play area zones, the AXON AX 100 MKII even makes your guitar multitimbral - you can play different instruments by splitting the fretboard, strings or pick position!

    Axon MkII

    Decide carefully how you intend to use this product, either as a controller for an external sound module or as a stand-alone solution to getting synth sounds on guitar. If the latter, I recommend Roland products instead.

    I did a lot of research on this unit before trying it out but found that it failed to live up to the hype as a sound generation machine. Internal sounds are dismal compared to Roland's. (If you intend to use an external sound module then this will not be an issue for you.)

    I didn't find the tracking to be significantly better than Roland's and false note triggering was much worse with the Axon, even after tweaking all the parameters.

    On the face of it, I like the Axon's rack format and connection options but in every important respect I found it a let-down. I must add that I was using a Roland GK pickup not Axon's own (whether or not that makes a difference).

    AXON AX100 Mk11

    Anyone wanting a highly accurate tracking midi converter need look no further. Developed from earlier models ,used by no less than John McClaughlin, the Axon tracks, perfectly at any picking speed.

    Potential buyers need to be aware of the general view that a piezo system such as the Graphtec is the best means to trigger the Axon as opposed to a Magnetic pickup solution. Need to add therefore another £300 on top of the price of the Axon for a pickup solution.

    Other features on the Axon make it a really interesting and flexible musical tool. I refer specifically to the string fret and pick position splits which allow virtualy any permutation of sound splits across the instrument.

    An example of a bass plus ride symbol on the bottom 2 strings plus a Rhodes type piano on the top 4 exemplifies the kind of useful configuration that can be achieved. There are loads of others without doubt.

    The Internal sounds are a bit 'curates egg' but in any event I intend to link the Axon to Gigasampler or a module for a no compromise solution.I suspect that might be the inclination of others due to small sample sizes used in the sound module which leave some internal sounds quite compromised.
    Pads/ensembles tend to be the better sounds for me at any rate. Saxes are plain dreadful but I would be generous enough to suggest taste and musical context impact heavily on how these samples are used. I am playing all my Charlie Parker licks using a oboe sound which is a bit different but works well.

    In comparision to other units on the market I may not be the best judge since my experiences with a number of Roland units and their extremely disappointing tracking had effectively kept me out of the midi guitar market for years.

    After researching what was available or coming to market I waited almost a year for the Axon. I wasnt disappointed and for the price I don't believe anyone wanting to seriously use midi would be either.Probably the best purchase I've made in the last 10 years.
