Catching the details
I own the Focusrite Red 1 for a week now and maybe it\'s too soon for a final judgement, but I decided to give it a shot.
The first thing I did with the Red 1 is to record spoken voice. My not-so-fancy microphone (Se electronics 2200A) started to sound a lot more professional, especially in the higher frequencies. Every detail is captured, wether you like it or not :-)
There\'s no low pass filter on the preamps, but it doesn\'t need one. If there are low frequencies in the source, they\'re being captured, if there\'s no low frequencies, the Red 1 doesn\'t compensate for that. Sometimes a preamps will add some punch or warmth, the Red 1 just delivers the truth. So if you have a beautiful voice( wich I don\'t), you\'ll get excellent recordings, but if you can\'t tune a drumkit, you might want to use a diffrent set of preamps, because every ring or sizzle will be very audible.
But, speaking of drums, if you do know how to make a drumkit sound great (wich I actually can), your reward will be huge. I never experienced my drums to be so open and alive. And adding some compression afterwards turned out to be a true surprise, all the details were perfectly reproduced.
So, if you are a good singer (or you know one ;-) )or you got other good sounding soundsources you\'d like to record, then the Red 1 (or 8 of course) is a piece of equipment I would certainly recommend. However, if you\'re going to make ambient recordings in awfull sounding room, the Red 1 might just make it worse, because it\'s so honest.
No wonder Focusrite recommends to use the Red 1 with high class microphones, because it can make something great sound like something really really great!
