Focusrite Voice Master Pro
I have always had to work very hard to get a good vocal sound, beavering away with all kinds of plugins trying to get it just right but never really being satisfied with the end result. As anyone who knows their stuff will tell you it is vitally important that you get the best sound you can in the first place before resorting to digital trickery and plugging straight into the preamps on my Tascam FW 1884 wasn't cutting the mustard.
I had a good look around and the Voice Master Pro caught my attention. As a reasonably advanced amateur I have a good working knowledge of what I needed to get a good vocal tone and this Focusrite unit seemed to have just that.
First things first, using just the preamp part of the Voicemaster improved the quality of vocal takes by a huge amount. So much so that it was a while before I started messing around with the expander, compressor, voice optimised eq, tube sound and de-esser. All of which are fantastic. The only gripe I would have is that if you need to really 'expand' a signal there are some artifacts that can ruin it for you. While this isn't a problem if your vocalist is in a completely dead room with a good pair of closed back headphones it can cause problems if there is any kind of noise in the room you are recording in. So make sure you have a space to record your vocals in that is as quiet as possible.
If you are, like me, a keen amateur working in a project studio then this is a fantastic piece of kit at a very good price. Using my Rode NT-1 mic I am getting results that I would previously have thought were only possible after spending a couple of grand on a top or the range mic. As I said before the pre-amp alone might be enough for many people. Then as you start to explore the rest of the features you will realise that this is truly a fantastic bit of kit.
