Quiklok A85 Overhead Mic Stand: A lot to say about a little n large item.
Last on my list of things for a location recording session was a decent mic stand. The Rode NT 2-A condenser mic I hoped to use is a pretty weighty beasty, and I suddenly realised that I couldn\'t afford to pop it on the end of any ordinary stage stand, however good. I needed a stand that would assert its place in the recording space, somehow commanding respect from the musicians, maybe keeping them in awe of the technician\'s listening ear. So, I searched on-line.
K&M do a large overhead mic stand, but it costs well over £200. Then I found the quikok A85. But Dolphin Music didn\'t list one on their site. I thought, I bet if I speak to these guys direct, they might be able to help. It only took Dolphin 4 days to source an A85 and deliver it to me - fab!
Even better, the guy on the phone (Sorry - I\'ve forgotten your name - but you\'re all very helpful) announced there\'d be a price adjustment from his original quote: £2 less! Now, it\'s a long time since I had a price adjusted down, except by someone who\'s paying me!
Less natter, more info.
The Quiklok A85 has adjustable spread feet, keeping everything above them reliably stable and safe. The 3-stage raisers kept the mighty mic in its position 2.5 m in mid-air for 4 days\' constant recording. The counter-balance on the top boom, together with the toothed adjusting rings (where others, including K&M, would use woven rubber or leather that eventually wears out) meant that the whole thing could have been set even higher, say 3.5 m. The cable clips (4) helped keep the rig tidy - and the overall impression gave the effect I was hoping for: positive positioning in the recording environment.
That\'s a wholly excellent deal - and a clear reminder that something as little as a mic stand can have a large effect on a session. So, it\'s great to see that Dolphin now have it as a regular stock item.
And so, no apology for saying such a lot about it.
