Tascam DR-07
I chose the Tascam over other makes as I use a tascam multitracker as well and was happy with the brand quality. The unit does all it says it can and I have recorded 2 full band rehearsals so far. The auto level control isnt suitable for use in loud environments and was choppy but the manual setting when adjusted correctly was fine. It was set far too low in the first rehearsal but bringing the level up in sound forge by normalising it recovered the signal but didnt result in any excess noise appearing. Using 2000mA ni-mh rechargeable batteries didnt get the 7.5 hours battery life but more like 4 hours. The overall audio quality was good and the unit easy to use without too much referring to the manual. It would be nice to be able to skip through a track faster to find specific points as a 1 hour take took a lot of trawling through. Also it would be good to be able to rename your files after recording so you can put some form of identification to them. The driverless install is welcome and XP and Vista detected the external drives without problem. I used Sony Soundforge Pro 9 for post production. It would have been nice of Tascam to throw in an audio editor for those who dont posess one as some form of PP software is essential to get the best from the DR-07. (The Yamaha unit at the same price gives you a lite version of Cubase). Enough of the gripes - What you do get is an all in one pocket sized near studio quality recording soloution for less than the price of a decent mic. Nice touch to see a line in and separate mic input as well. Unfortunately our rehearsal room was far too bright and echoey, Had this not been the case some of the tracks captured would have been just in the frame to distrubute on a demo cd or post up on the web. The unit worked well with the \"Audacity\" freeware audio editor and with plenty of free burning software you\'ve no excuse! I bet Tascam would love to find a band that gets signed using one!
