After relying on PC speakers for a number of years I decided that it was finally time to upgrade my studio setup and treat myself to some proper studio monitor speakers. I had been monitoring (no pun intended) the latest products for some time until I finally read about these little beauties in the free Dolphin music magazine - Music Planet. Not only did they sound good (on paper at least), but they were also compact and affordable. So I put my faith in the review and ordered a pair.
I was not disappointed. They fit neatly into my studio and the sound that they produce is fantastic : crystal clear highs, good midrange and smooth, clean bass.
If the main test for studio monitor speakers is to give a true representation of your sound, then these pass with flying colours. Before I had the Studio Docks, I would master a track using a combination of headphones and my old PC speakers. Everything would sound great, or so I thought, until I burned the new track to CD and played it on my stereo or in my car. I would often be annoyed to find that the bass or the kick drum were completely overwhelming the rest of the mix. Another common complaint would be that levels were not quite right - certain sounds needed turning up or turning down.
Having made one new track so far using the Studio Docks for mastering, the difference is obvious : if the mix sounds good through the Studio Docks, it will sound good elsewhere. They really do seem to give a true and accurate picture of your mix.
These are highly recommended.
Phatcamp began in 1999, when Alex Cargill started producing his own unique blend of techno, breaks and ambient / chillout grooves.
Now, here's a truly original idea! The Bulb-Sound-Speaker, designed by Castiglione Morelli, is, as you might guess from the name, a light bulb that’s actually a speaker.
