Noisy
The product looks robust and the switches work well, better than buttons in my opinion.
However I used it to plug the output of my PC\'s sound card (two unbalanced channels) to the balanced XLR input of two active speakers, and the hiss isn\'t reduced at all. It just doesn\'t do the job.
versatile, but complicated
Behringer's usual problem is that they try to cram too much into one small box - and this is no exception. For somebody that's familiar with it, this is a very useful tool, providing two separate channels for stereo instruments like keyboards - or it can be used as a single DI with loop through, allowing a local monitor. It does all this very well, and it's presented in a tidy aluminium box with good quality connectors and all the appropriate switches. It's active (no problems with loop systems then) and can be powered by 9v battery or phantom power. The problem I have is that most of the people I work with don't want to know how it works - and they don't want to use the Ultra in case they plug something into the wrong hole or move the wrong switch and blow something up.
Behringer ULTRA-DI DI20
A very nice idea, but not quite as well executed as might be wished. The idea of a palm sized box that will direct inject two signals, or can be used to split a single signal to multiple places is great, and in general the DI120 lives up to the promise. It's rugged, easy to use, and the slide pattern switches are less prone to getting knocked than push buttons. Phantom power works well, so you don't need to worry about battery power unless your inputs lack phantom. Usefully, the On LED illuminates continuously when on Phantom power, but flashes on battery to reduce the drain.
Slightly less convenient is having only one attenuator switch for both channels and two lots of connector labeling for splitter and dual channel modes. The real let--down, however, is the sound quailty. If you use them as instrument-level DI boxes with passive pickups you will get a noticeable level of hiss, even on live rigs, which becomes really annoying in a recording situation. It's a shame, because otherwise it's an excellent and very afordable product.
