JBL PRX515
With my old long serving Peavey rig beginning to sound \'tired\' - well 14 years is a long time in gigging terms - I decided that it was necessary to upgrade to a newer system...
I checked the current systems on the net and finally settled on a pair of the JBL PRX515. As a one man show, the main concerns were weight (no roadies here), size, performance including bass response and, of course, cost. So what attracted me to the JBLs? Well, the weight at approx 57 lbs each was almost identical to my old CL2s, so that wasn\'t going to be a problem. Although quite a lot bigger, they would still fit in my current van. That was 2 boxes ticked. The bass response and general performance I was going to have to take on trust until I had a chance to try them, but with JBLs reputation and the spec sheet I had downloaded, I wasn\'t overly concerned on that front. And the cost was pretty much what I would expect to pay for high quality speakers. However, the real bonus here was that they each contained 500 watts of Crown amplification. That was going to mean one less flightcased power amp to carry each outing...
And so I ordered them from Dolphin. Mike was really helpful and did me a favour on the price too. They duly turned up by courier the very next day and i helped the delivery guy manhandle the large boxes into my porch. Upon first inspection, they looked fantastic. Quality finish and built really solid. You just knew that these were going to be the business...
I didn\'t take them out live for 2 weeks. Sure, I tested them in the house but it\'s not the same as a proper live environment is it? And the reason that I hesitated to use them? JBL don\'t provide covers and so I had to search high and low on the net to find someone who was able to supply them. The only company I found were in America. D2F (designed to fit) Covers. Expensive but really top quality with a glove like fit of gererously padded material. And so, at last I was good to go.
The final chapter in this journey started with a club gig where the audience was \'waiting for God\' aged. As a rule, older people don\'t like it too loud, so it kept it down somewhat. But even at a reduced volume, the quality of the sound produced was just amazing. Rich warm bass and smooth top end. None of that piercing treble that I had gotten used to. This was smooth like a matured sherry with a clarity that I had longed for. The vocals were really good. Plenty of headroom and dynamics. I went home feeling very satisfied with my purchase.
Since then I have used them about a dozen times in various places. Every time they have delivered. I have awarded these speakers 9 stars. If they (JBL) had supplied covers then it would have been a maximum 10! Do yourself a favour and grab a pair of these babies. You won\'t regret it !!
