Mackie SRM450v2
I needed a new pair of powered speakers for our solo singing act. we do a variety of work, antyhing from clubs and pubs, restaurants, corporate events etc. venues vary wildy as you can imagine, as does access to rooms etc. it is crucial that we have a lightweight yet powerful set up that we can adapt to any situation. I decided to go for a pair of SRM450\'s but seeing as a version 2 gad been released, thought, why not get the newest model. so far i\'ve not been disappointed.
for the work we do, they are ideal. firstly, the weight, good for mobility, you can carry both easily. I really like the fact that there are multiple handles, it makes it easy to flip them around, on and off stands etc.
the important bit, sound quality.
again, for the work we do, they are pretty much perfect, the voclal distinction from these is beautiful, I\'ve read about the various gizmo\'s and technical jargon about crossovers etc but it\'s really a bit too deep for me, all i need to know is that they sound good, and these really do.
the bass response is good but not overpowering, if you\'re looking for serious bass presence and resonance you\'ll definitely want a sub to run alongside these speakers. In my experience, people do not always want a lot of bass, especially if you are a vocal act, personally i love bass and have been disappointed at times when my audience have told me there\'s too much when I\'m not really feeling there is enough!! anyway, I cannot compare the v2 to the first \'450\' because i did not own them, my previous units were LEMD400\'s which were great speakers, very warm sound and the only reason i\'ve retired them is due to age and a slight dip in performance after 5 hard years. Bass was more rounded on those units but vocal definition is dfeinitely far superior on the mackies.
the mixer I use is the new mackie PRO8FX, I can also recommend this as a great little mixer, the effects are perfect and very useable, combined with the 450v2\'s it is a great little set up.
we played a large and echoey looking concert hall at the weekend with around 150 rattling around in it, it looked like a bit of a nightmare acoustically but we got a lovely warm, room filling sound, it was the first time we\'d had to push the sound and i can report that it was loud at the back (about 25+ metres from the stage, split level) without making your ears bleed at the front, very impressed.
I read overheating was sometimes a problem with the old version, judging by the heatsinks after our prformance on saturday, i can\'t see this being an issue this time around, a little warmer than hand temperature immediately after finishing a 45 minute set at a pretty high volume.
Build quality is as you\'d expect, very solid indeed, I thought the blue colour was a mistake and black would have been better, but once the lights go down, these are black!
overall i\'m very pleased, i cannot comment on longevity but if the electronics can last a quarter of a time that the cabinets appear they will, my kid will be using them to play me out when I go to that big old concert hall in the sky!
well, I hope this helps, not the most technical of reports perhaps but practical, which as what these speakers primarily are, as well as extremely effective.
Cheers
