KRK ERGO
When I priced up a decent multiband control room eq unit and then added the essential reference mic cost to that and all the hassle of using some complex room eq wizard software available on the web, this started to look like a better deal all round. Coupled with this, the fact that this is also a great monitor switcher, with an illuminated knob and A/B(Sub) selection switches with analogue and SPdif inputs AND is a also very decent Firewire audio interface to boot. I went for it.
It really is very good indeed. You don’t just get a 10 band room EQ, you get a tailored 1024 band ‘room modelled’ EQ that has a Global setting for the room in general and a special mix position or focused setting for when you are in you mix position. The software walks you through the mic setup and room learn process and it took me about 30 mins to get the room knowledge up to 96%. Meaning the ERGO had a really good 3d model of my dreadful boxy office with buzzing Victorian bay windows. Quite honestly the cat could have done it if he could have moved the mike stand.
Not convinced? Google ‘RoomPerfect’ and watch the scientific seminar video. This makes ARC look very simplistic.
The sound was tighter and more focused. The bass didn’t boom anymore and the windows stopped buzzing (that I did not expect to get sorted). Most impressive, was that my mixes now sound as good on any system I listen to them on.
Negatives? Very few. It makes a bad thump when it goes off. A surprise as it comes from a speaker company. I have KRK Rokit 8’s and they take quite a hit at power down. Also, The ‘auto-switch’ from SPdif to analogue input sometimes gets a bit confused until you pull out and reinsert the SPdif again.
Overall, I would say that this box has changed my system from borderline demo only, to mastering capable at a stroke. I really am chuffed to bits with this box.
