Sometimes floor monitors are a problem. There isn’t enough room for them onstage or someone sits in and can’t hear the monitors or the drummer can’t hear them well enough. Or perhaps it’s a pick-up gig or a rehearsal and you didn’t have enough time to set them up. In any case, sometimes it would be preferable just to put on headphones and somehow connect them to the PA. That’s where a headphone tap comes in. This is a passive device with an input to connect the PA or monitor amplifier and an output to connect the headphones. A volume control regulates the headphone level and internal resistors keep the unit’s impedance high enough to protect the headphones. It also protects the amplifier from encountering too low a load impedance while powering tap units, the speaker system or several tap units by themselves. The HeadTAP will also work with a stereo headphone amplifier for use in recording situations when you want to add headphones for additional performers.

I've been a drummer/vocalist for 40+ years, and the single biggest challenge has been effective vocal monitoring. The second biggest challenge was getting the electronics dweebs in the band to buy the idea that an inexpensive passive device would work. Well, it does--perfectly. I wish I'd found this thing decades ago. All I do is plug it into the floor monitor jack and slap on the Sennheiser open back, on-ear phones. I get plenty of ambient sound for a live feel and a great vocal mix. Granted, we only run vocals and and drum mikes through the board, but the kick drum and vocal harmonies are all I need to hear. If we played a large venue (which we don't) and miked guitars (we don't) then I'd probably have to go with a headphone amp and isolate my mic. For what we do (bars, clubs, small-town outdoor summer festivals) it's the best forty bucks I ever spent. Singing drummers in local r&b/country/rock/eclectic bands, this thing was made for us. And, while I don't recommend doing it, I've dropped it on wood stages, flatbeds and cement. It still works.
