Fender Baja Telecaster
I waited a few weeks before writing this review, as any guitar reveals itself better after a personal set up and a few weeks of playing.
Now the time has passed, I realise that the Fender Baja Telecaster is not just a guitar, but more of an addiction ! I find the chunky neck and comfy 9.5 " radius fretboard is ideal - and feels like home every time I pick it up. Gibson players will like the feel of this too, the neck and handling feels very Les Paul. I gather from our American cousins that we are very lucky in Europe to have ready supplies at good prices. In the U.S.A the Baja appears to have achieved something of a cult status - with one guy on the 'Telecaster discussion forum' buying as many as he can afford.
I must say that although this has the flexible S1 wiring and 4 way switch mod already done as stock, it was not these 'extra' options I bought / love it for. The thing that I find so good about this guitar is that you have the cosmetics of a 50s re-issue combined with modern playability at a price I never thought I could get a 'real' Telecaster for.
This proves to me without a doubt that made in Mexico does not have to mean compromise. The fret edges where smooth - and generally the whole guitar was well put together. It is quiet ( for a single coil guitar ) - and the special pickups used for this model are good enough to leave in and just enjoy as they are. Even the very choosy online subscription magazine ' Tone Quest' raved about it, the only thing they wanted changing was to fit 'old' style Kluson machine heads. Personally, I think the existing 'ping' copys are good and solid. I only mark it down to 9 because of a little inconsistency in the paint job near the rear strap button, and the fact that the body cavity either side of the bridge is slightly visible. At far less than half the price of it's made in North America counterparts - I can live with that.
All in all this guitar is a real winner !
