Mackie Spike
I followed the installation instructions and it just kept crashing my computer. I contacted Mackie a few times to resolve the problem and they never bothered getting back to me.
Spike- easy desktop recording and mixing?
As a studio and mobile user of the Mackie Onyx firewire interface, I bought the Spike in order to capture simple stereo recordings on the move with my Dolphin Music Hi- End laptop (highly recommended!).
It hasn't let me down once, and I find the sound quality good for such a low priced device.
It serves me beautifully as a mixdown interface, and the software dynamics processing is of good quality. The immediately to hand control of the monitor mix is a great bonus- one knob will balance the sound from the laptop against the zero latency foldback of the mic inputs- easy!
The only drawback I've found is the lack of urgency with which Mackie seem to upgrade firmware- I want 96khz now, not 2 years after buying a device which should already be capable.
All in all I've had a positive experience of using the Spike to work on mixes away from the studio, and I'm glad I bought it!
Mackie Spike
Mackie has departed from their rock solid dependability with the Spike, which works well enough on the Mac, but fails miserably in Windows XP. It is obvious that this is a poorly ported Mac-based system as it uses USB 1 and doesn't play the IRQ game well at all. Mackie should only offer this package for Mac users, as I haven't been able to find a single satisfied Windows user, outside of Mackie support, which makes claims of Spike running just fine on Windows. I smell a class action suit in the making.
