Hardware good, let down by very poor driver software
The hardware looks great on paper but the drivers are another matter. You must power the device up using a very specific sequence and disable your computer\'s sleep/lock mode otherwise it will cause a Kernel Panic (OSX) or BSOD (Windows) every time. M-Audio know about this problem and simply specify that sleep mode is \'not supported\', neglecting to mention this lack of support causes crashes taking the whole computer out at the driver level.
Googling reveals that I\'m not alone with this problem.
I\'ve tried to use it on both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard but after losing a lot of work on both computers and spending countless hours rebooting to inspect the damage, I\'ve had to concede defeat. Unfortunately my patience and persistence with the problem has meant that I\'ve lost my right to return it within 14 days so I\'ll have to eBay it.
Further warning - make sure you install the PC drivers before you connect the device otherwise Windows gets stuck in a loop where it can\'t install the driver and can\'t uninstall it either, even after rebooting.
M-Audio Fast Track Ultra
Bought this about 2 weeks ago and I am absolutely delighted with it. Excellent stability and crystal-clear sound. Multiple analogue inputs/outputs are very useful to me - e.g. I can use a splitter box to record the output from my Digitech pedal and the clean guitar signal at the same time, allowing greater processing flexibility later.
The other interfaces I looked at in this price range mostly had only 2 analogue inputs - if you want more you have to use S/PDIF which adds cost and complexity.
For my needs, using with SONAR 8.5, this suits me perfectly.
Higly recommended and great value.

This is a really good interface. Got it a week ago, and I really like it.
You get 4 mic preamps, 2 instrumentinput, very low latency. And very good sound. This is great value.
Read reviews on Sound on sound, Musicradar ect. They all say the same: That this is a very good interface for this price.

M-Audio Fast Track Ultra
As far as functionality against price is concerned, you cant go far wrong with this piece of kit, being USB 2 with lots of ins and outs.
M-Audio have improved driver installation. No more restarting, plugging in at the right time etc.
HOWEVER, drivers aren\'t perfect. In certain situations, depending on your setup, the drivers can change your system\'s USB power settings (i had this on windows XP prof SP2). This results in the unit just disconnecting during use.
I\'ve managed to fix this by tampering with the settings in the device manager - more info is on their forums.
There is also a hardware issue that results in the unit cutting out. Apparently this affects only 1% of units shipped.
Now that (fingers crossed), my unit is fully functional, it seems to be working fine. If, however, i was gigging regularly and needed to rely on a soucdard day in, day out, i would not buy this one.
For home studio use, this product is excellent (provided you can get it to work).
Hope this helps :)
