Vienna Symphonic Library Solo Strings - Standard
This is the most authentic solo string library I\'ve possessed. Great sound on each patch and the ability to swap between patches like staccato and legato etc by key switching is great. You don’t need a master key board as recommended if you compose music in Key Editor in Cubase. You have all midi commands you need like velocity, pitch-bend, aftertouch, expression, pedal, breath, main volume etc including key swithing in Key Editor to control the Vienna Ensemble.
Things I’ve noticed that are not so good is the x-fading technology for sustain notes. It might be excellent with other Vienna instruments, but not strings. When you use the Velocity X-fader for sustained strings and fade up for a stronger note, the soft note is playing while a stronger note is fading in. When both notes reach 50%, you can slightly hear “two” strings playing at the same time, creating a tiny “flanger” effect, which is not so good in my opinion. But this is impossible to hear using Ponticello since its a “fuzzy” sound. When using Cell X-fade, you will learn that some patches work together, and others don’t. But there are methods to get around the problem with “two” strings playing at the same time, and that’s when you X-fade quick. That could be from legato-no-vibrato to legato-vibrato or tremolo. Ponticello is the only sustain I’ve noticed you can X-fade slow. Another funny thing is that a few samples has a background noise from the player. I don’t know what it is, but it sounds like dangling necklace or something, its like a tiny “click“ of metal. But I’ve recorded real strings before and know its almost impossible to avoid background noises since there are humans playing the instrument. But its kind of sad you get that noise every time you play a specific note. However, up-grades from Vienna will probably be available in the future. Another minus was the registration, because the web addresses in the video tutorials to download the latest eLicenser was old and not in use anymore. But it was not that hard to navigate around internet to find what you needed in order to make it work. And I have never had any complications using this product after.
Some people might disagree with me when it comes to the X-fading problem. It is a product very close to be perfect, and it is probably to some. But will there ever be a sample library that can replace a real string player when these instruments are so “organic”?
Anyway, I love this product. Well done Vienna!
