We don't know how the engineers at Direct Sound did it but they achieved a 29 db reduction passively.  No batteries! No electronics.  That means nothing to break or wear out.

Noise Reduction Headphones Save Your Ears

These noise reducing or canceling headphones cut down the outside noise by 29 db, so you can set the headphone volume on a low to medium setting and save those ears.  Headphones that don't reduce the outside noise need to be loud to be heard.  Ouch, that hurts the ears, and can cause permanent damage. The 40 mm drivers in these noise canceling headphones are so good that they can be used with your CD player.

Drummer Headphones With Unbeatable Comfort

The ear muffs and fit of these noise reducing  headphones have been refined over the years to be the most comfortable headphones available.   Remember that these headphones are created by a drummer, so you can wear these for hours without fatigue and ear discomfort.

Hear Each Stroke

When used as drummer headphones the reduction in  ambient noise allows you to hear your drum strokes more distinctly.

Oops, I think I've been sent a pair of roadworkers ear-defenders by mistake. No, no these are correct. You cannot really confuse these headphones with any other headphones I have ever seen. Especially with the words "Extreme Isolation" printed on both sides.

As most of my work is location recording, the extreme isolation element was what really sold them to me. And in that respect I have to admit they really do exactly what they say on the box.
Superb for adjusting mic postions when you are next to the source as you can hear exactly what is being recorded.

On the downside they are not exceptional sound quality for monitoring purposes but I don't think they were really designed with that in mind. I find them more than adequate for monitoring on location, but would never feel confident with them them on their own on mixdown.

One really annoying part is the hard wired cable which is just waiting to break and will probably be a pain (if at all possible) to fix.

For what they are designed to do I think they are an excellent choice. I personaly could not award them a 10/10 purely because of the hard wiring issue.

I am a drummer and when not rehersing with my band like to do about one hour a day practising along to a CD. The problem is keeping the CD player volume up loud enough to hear over the drums but low enough so as not to cause serious lughole damage..not easy.
But these headphones are superb!!..they cut out an awfull lot of noise from the drums therefore allowing you to turn the volume down on the CD player and in turn not causing tinitus or worse (too late for me I'm afraid after 30 years of thumping drums).
I wish I had got a pair of these years ago and at the moment am trying to persude the rest of the band to get a pair for practice sessions.
If you are a drummer get a pair!!!
£99 is a small investment aginst permanent hearing loss...pardon??!! :)
