Addictive Drums
Being a basement recording hobbyist it is always great to find a product that makes things go smoother/faster/easier, and, of course, produce excellent results. Addictive Drums comes pretty darn close to all those things. Don't want to fiddle and diddle with all kinds of paramenters or effects..? Ok..just drag and drop one AD's many loops and grooves into your DAW and let loose. Oh..so you want to fiddle and diddle..? Well then, have at it!! AD's interface is fairly straight forward and very intuitive from just keeping it simple, by using the dozens of presets, or tweaking away until your heart's content for hours.
But what about the sounds...? Incredible! One of the great features that appealed to me right off with AD was the cymbal sounds. They are amazingly close to 'real' kit studio quality. All the kit pieces, and there are several kits to choose from, are editable. You can adjust the individual mics on each drum (the kick and snare have 2 mics each!), you can adjust the 2 room mics and, you can adjust the 2 overhead mics too! AD also has 2 built in reverbs, compressors, and other effect parameters. It is quite simply a self contained drum studio.
Working with the grooves/loops is as simple as dragging and dropping them into a track of your DAW. They are all MIDI files and can be fully edited. AD is also a multichannel instrument and, if your DAW supports multichannel, AD will assign each kit piece to its own track allowing for further editing and processing possibilities. One of the really exceptional features fo AD are the 'fill' loops. These are grouped with the individual style grooves for really quick and effective programming of your project. Got a great funk groove goin'? Just pick out and a wide variety of funk fills to it and have a blast!
The developers at XLN Audio are very enthusiastic and take an active role at their web site by moderating their AD forum. Its great to get on the forum and actually communicate directly with the developers. The are keen to answer questions and welcome any/all feedback and comments.
AD almost has all the features any hobbyist or pro could want. However, it gets a '9' due to the exclusion of brushes and other percussion instruments which is a bit of a let down considering the price of the program. XLN's solution is to market add-ons, at extra cost of course, for these features in the future. It's a sneaky strategy...you will become addicted and you will shell out $$ for these features that, in my opinion, should have been included from the beginning. Also, it would have been great to have AD work as a stand alone app. You must open it as a plug-in in your DAW to use it.
I recommend you download the demo and try it. The demo only includes kick/snare/HH but has no time limit set on it. After trying the demo out I bought the full version. I work with an Intel Mac and Logic Express. Installation/registration (no dongle - thank the lord!) was quick and easy and it works great. It has made my projects come together quicker and much closer to 'pro' sounding.
