The H2 will record via the integral one point stereo design microphone, and achieves the Mid/Side (MS) Stereo technique by using a 3 microphone capsule configuration and digital signal processing. General Mid/Side (MS) stereo uses one directional cardioid microphone (M-Mid) and bi-directional cardioid microphone (S-Side), placed at 90 degree angles.

The Mid microphone picks up the monophonic sound while the Side microphone will pick up the left/right difference sound. Subtracting and adding the two microphone signals yields separate Left and Right channels, and also permits the adjustment of the pickup angle such as 90 or 120 degrees.

There is a switchable pickup angle between the left and right channels so the user can select 90 degrees for a single voice or a single instrument, while a pickup angle of 120 degrees would be more suited to several voices or instruments arranged across stage. The cardioid pattern is also switchable into front, rear and omni directions, and as such 360 degree sound can be recorded as 2 channel or 4-channel data simultaneously.

The H2 has an integral USB interface with an audio interface function, making it usable as a USB microphone. The H2 uses WAV 96kHz/48kHz/44.1kHz and MP3 up to 320kbps VBR data format. The EXT MIC IN feature allows the connection of external powered microphones, and the H2 also has a time stamp function for recordings.

It is also possible to use PC authoring software to arrange 4 channel data into the Dolby 5.1 surround sound format.

Zoom H2 Handy Recorder

— Peter Smith January 20, 2010

First the cons: The interface is like stepping back 15 years. A tiny display and a cumbersome menu system with a non-intuitive navigation system to match. A look at modern mobile phone design would suggest the way to go.

That said you do soon get used to the interface and the sound quality is amazing for such a small device. This must be because the inbuilt microphones (4 of them) are comparatively huge. To be able to record direct to mp3 without having to get an additional interface is excellent. Any connection I might want is there. It\'s got line out (to speaker), line in, external mic in and mini usb connection as well as external power supply.

Overall I\'m pleased with it but would have preferred a better interface.

Zoom H2 SD

— Gerry August 26, 2009

Yes, it\'s a nice little device. Probably one of the best gadgets I\'ve bought in recent years.

It has a few minor annoying design quirks but the one thing that really messes me up is that it won\'t write more than 4GB to the SD card. I configure it for PCM rather than MP3 for enhanced audio (but more memory hungry) and I\'ve got a 16GB SD card that I use to share audio amongst all my devices, but the 4GB limitation means I\'m now looking around for another recorder that doesn\'t have that shortcoming.

It would be a big help if the product descriptions on this web site stated which audio loggers have the addressing limitation.

zoom h2 audio video sync

— abdiaziz April 28, 2009

i have been doing audi/video service last 10 years i come across
zoom h2 recorder realy its great product for recording eng/efp /documentaries for radio & tv.
some people they claim they having difficult syncronising zoom h2 audio to video.
here steps you can do;
first before you do anything just know that digital audio signal take either one or two possiple value, one positive one negative.
you must know sampling rate
you must know quatisation level.
also you must know digital band widht.
you must know procedures syncronising audio video, the smpte/ebu timecode/drobframe/ none drop frame
you must understand ltc/vitc/midi timecode/ filmtime code.
you must understand servo control transports/ master/ slave/ chase syncronzers/control syncronisers/tachometer control/film syncronisers.

any body can say zoom h2 cannot syncronize their video camera yes
thats true because either they are ill prepared or they dont understan
procedures of audio postproduction in video .
there are two procedures for shooting audio/ video;
1. single camera technique shooting video /film.

2. single camera recording with multitrack seperate sound.

a; either you use timecode to syncronise cemera and audio
or
b; slating when using video camera , the sound and picture are recorded seperately.
this technique is called double sytem shooting.
to match both of these together for edting later, its normal to provide a syncronous mark on the sound track and on the picture.
when ever i use my hand zoom h2 i u8e clapprer -board to use as reference between sound/video.
i recomend zoom h2 for film/video production anything as long you what you doing\\\'

great product .

Zoom H2

— Laurence Payne February 2, 2009

It performs well and sounds good, exactly as advertised. The display is tiny, but just about readable. The flimsy memory card cover broke on first use, but not having it is no handicap. The limited battery life means you really have to buy a new pair for each session. This gets expensive. Highly recommended for function, not quite so highly for design.

Zoom H2 Handy Recorder

— Steve Owen November 21, 2008

This is the puppie\'s parts and the dalmation\'s dangly bits all rolled into one. The sound is fantastic, it\'s easy to use and because it uses an SD card it\'s easy to transfer files. I\'ve recorded acoustic stuff and a full band rehearsal on it no problems. It\'s genuinely one of those things you buy than wonder how you coped before you had it.

Great

— R.Stafford September 17, 2008

I\'ve been using the Zoom H2 for nine months now and have no regrets about buying it. I\'ve been recording audio since I was a teenager in the 1970\'s. This is one of those products that makes me realise just how wonderful and inexpensive modern technology is when compared to the struggles and costs we had years ago.

I use the H2 for interviews (audio only and video). Also for recording atmospheres and sound effects for video editing.

To my ear, the built-in mics are great quality and the unit is very easy to use. Being able to record onto a standard SD card and with the H2 powered by AA batteries (or the PSU) gives maximum flexibility. I particularly like the fact that the PSU is supplied as part of the package.

On the minus side, the H2 is incredibly sensitive to handling noise and it\'s hard to find an external microphone that isn\'t too hissy. But some work OK.

And I can\'t understand why the H2 uses the slower full speed USB 2.0 rather than high speed. But transferring via a card reader is the easy solution to that.

To the person who complains about lack of sync during video interviews lasting an hour, just cut out a frame from the soundtrack here and there during gaps in the conversation. That\'s always been a part of film/video editing.

In conclusion, the Zoom H2 isn\'t perfect but it\'s still one of the best, most affordable little audio recorders produced to date. I can\'t wait to see what the company comes up with next!

thoughts on H2

— will rollason March 6, 2008

I only bought this to record rehersals and it works a treat. Stick it on a mike stand , dont matter how loud it gets, and let it run. Get home and put it on puter for chopping up or whatever, put it up on myspace for rest of band to listen and work on. Job done.
Will allow you to record in stereo or two pairs to mix down, but why?? If you want quality, buy some good mikes or go record in a studio.

Zoom H2 (H4)

— N. McGadie January 8, 2008

G. Limor's sync problem exists with the H4 as well if you transfer the file directly into your editor. I find that capturing realtime audio into my editor, while defeating part of the reason for digital recording, does at least keep sync for a reasonable duration and I use mine for over an hour with two cameras.

Zoom H2

— G. Limor October 5, 2007

On its own, it is a very handy piece of equipment. In the week that I have had the H2, I have tried it out in a number of different recording situations, and I have been generally pleased with the result.

Where the H2 fails is when you're recording audio to it for subsequent synchronization. In a recent event involving both audio and video recording, I recorded the desk output (3 radio mics) onto the H2 and a DAT recorder for safety, while filming the video onto two small handheld cameras.

When lining these up in the editing programme, the two video recorders' audio tracks and the DAT audio stream all lined up bit-perfect over a 60 minute segment, but the audio from the H2 had drifted by around 200ms over that period of time.

So the H2 is great for some of my requirements, but for others, it fails. It can not be used as a backup or an extra pair of channels for a multitrack recording due to this drift.

To be fair, this could be a problem with my particular model, but I would suggest that other users try this as well. And if you are going to require synchronized audio, better to rely on a different recorder, not the H2.

Well it has time code in BWF files which is great but there are no XLR connections on it. You know how weak minijack connections are, not good. Its a pitty they didnt upgrade the H4 with BWF timecode file recording, maybe they will SOON !!!!!!!
