Ibanez EWB205WNE-NT
I have had this bass for nearly two years now and I have to say that I am only beginning to like playing it, and I have thought of trading it in a couple of times. Once I received it, I felt the action was far too high, and when I took it for a set up a few months later, it was clear that the neck was taking all the tension, rather than the truss rod! (An archers bow, rather than a guitar!). The action now is ok, and to be fair, I have to tell myself to stop comparing it to my \'73 Fender Mustang Bass - a totally different animal! More recently, I have used it to learn & practice jazz lines and I now am fairly content with it. In terms of acoustic sound, it is great for practicing but I doubt the sound would carry alongside other acoustic instruments (especially the low B!) unless you use a heavy pick. Due to the shape of this behemoth, I feel the natural and most comfortable position for my hand to pluck is over the last few frets. On a positive note, this is a great looking bass, and the features (especially the tuner) are really good. The lesson I learnt here was not to be taken in by its attractive look, the features and a very reasonable price. I certainly wouldn\'t recommend this as your one and only bass and I really recommend you play it before you buy it. Would I buy it again? Probably not, although I may say differently in 6 months!
Best on the market
I ordered this bass to complement my Ibanez electric guitar, Ovation acoustic, Ibanez Sound gear bass and Hohner Profession Jack Custom 5 headless bass. That pretty much says it. Don\'t get this as your primary instrument or if you\'re a beginner.
Playing this monster and going back to an electric, is like playing a dreadnought with heavy strings and shifting back to a les paul with extra lights. The difference in the amount of work required is phenomenal! I love it. Playing anything after this is a dream. Think of it as training rocky style for a lightweight fight. That said, once you\'re up and running, it\'s great to play, solid, chunky, a real hands on experience.
The guitar itself is huge! Dwarfing my others not just in the size of the body, but the neck especially. It\'s solidly built, light for it\'s size but a bit uncomfortable to sit and play to begin with due to the depth and squareness of the edges of the body. Maybe that\'s my fault due to getting accustomed to the curves of the ovation though.
The finish is good as always with Ibanez, and the acoustic sound is very woody and rich, although accompanying even my ovation which is pretty quiet requires playing with a pick, fingers just won\'t cut it playing unplugged. This is a problem I\'ve found with pretty much all acoustic basses so don\'t take this as a negative.
The built in tuner and sound module give you a wide range of sounds and plugged in is where this really shines. The acoustic options are better than my Ovation, and the XLR connector gives a completely noiseless output.
The guitar was setup perfectly when it arrived, strings tuned down for transport. The strings took about a week to stop being TOO clean, and showing up my performance mistakes and mellowed to a perfect acoustic sound. The tuners are solid and precise and since I\'ve had it I haven\'t had to retune once the strings have stretched. The double strap studs are ok, but the position of the second one behind the heel of the neck makes the guitar want to swing forward when playing. Took a while to get used to that.
I\'ve tried playing numerous styles from Iron Maiden to Dave Brubeck as an experiment, and figured this bass will at a pinch replace any other. The neck is very playable with good access all the way up. The string tension is quite high compared with my Hohner which I prefer. It does take some effort to play though, as shown by my guitarist failing dismally to get a clean sound out of it. Finally an instrument that proves us bassists are musicians in our own right.
I love it, and if it got lost of stolen, I\'d go right out and buy another one. I\'ve tried pretty much every other one on the market, and it competes and possibly beats all others I\'ve tried. Well done again Ibanez.
product review
this guitar is absolutely amazing, as soon as i got it out of the box i did not regret it at all, very comfortabler to play with, and the features it has, built in tuner and equalizer AND the out put jacks all make it a real pro guitar, but also very user friendly and versatile making it a good choice for any time and place.
it sounds amazing, very clean and clear tone.
i would give it 20 sstars if i could. best investment any one could hope for, style, looks and performance.. allin one package
Ibanez EWB205WNE-NT
I\'ve had this bass for over a week now and have finally had enough hands on time to give it a fair review. Firstly I should say that I am normally fairly reticent to buy an instrument I haven\'t played, but I took a chance on the EWB205 and have been really pleased I did.
Out of the box the instrument was well set up (the bass was de-tuned by a semitone to relieve the pressure on the neck) pristine and even had a battery loaded for the tuner and pickup. I had worried that the list of features available on the EWB205 would mean that the instrument would feel cheap, but the guitar felt, played and sounded like a much more expensive piece of kit. The option to run the guitar to a sound-card via XLR means a really clean, hiss free signal to your DAW and the EQ is really musical.
All in all I would be happy to recommend the EWD205 to anyone who needs a quality instrument, really good value with little compromise (it even has a second strap button!!!). The only thing I would have liked extra would have been a thumb rest (a personal thing) which is why I stopped at 9/10.
