Randall RG75 G3 PLUS
This amp sounds as good as my old all valve Marshall JCM 1/2 stack but fraction of weight, size and cost. We shall never be parted...
Worthwhile
I first looked into this amp because of all the decent reviews it had been getting off the web about what a great alternative to the Marshall line of budget amps (MG, AVT). Now when i compare this to them i definitely think this comes out on top. The Randall's clean sound is just superb possibly due to the celestion speakers it's clear and full and rich and everything you want. Coupled with the clean boost mode on your foot switch you shouldn't have anything to gripe about in the clean setting.
However the reviews i read did give excessive amounts of praise to the overdrive settings. Gain 1 i think is OK as it is based on British distortion its a good overdrive and a good feature to have as an alternative to your main distortion. But i did set too much stock by the Gain 2 which i expected to be massively heavy and make me throw my metal zone out the window. But it is clear now that your only going to find that solution from a rather more expensive range of amplifiers.
As when i turned it on i found it still had more beef than the first setting but was still not enough. I tried a saturated distortion to do some thrash and it seemed somewhat too cold and tinny to bare. You take everything back a notch and you get a tube-ish sound that would serve i slightly higher gain purpose than the other overdrive.
The bottom line is even with everything on max your not gonna see crazy amounts of difference the 2 overdriven settings and this is really my only let down with the amp that i doubt i will be fiddling with the settings on the amp half as much as i will with a pedal.
Although this amp has some potential for some really good tones they are not realized unless u find yourself a decent distortion pedal you will easily get what you want from this thing as it does have the capacity for a range of sounds at a pro level. Just not when its on its own as it doesn't have enough fuzzy warmth.
I was using this with my Squier Strat which i naturally assume part of the problem but i did use the amp with a dean which had high gain Seymour Duncan's which did significantly improve the sound character. The reverb isn't enormously powerful but is a nice addition to the more tasteful parts of your music. But could have done with more depth.
Bottom line is if you've got a half decent metal style guitar your gonna have more luck than me. But i do recommend strongly a distortion pedal to step up your sound as it will be some kind of wonderful if you do. A modest 9 because i was disappointed by Gain 2 but pleased at what can be achieved with this thing.
P.S. be prepared for a lot of bass as the amp's circuit was taken from a bass amp. Personally it never goes beyond 6 as it gets a bit intense there on after. Don't be perturbed this is a decent buy and i'm not displeased with it at all as long as i've got my pedal. Also dolphin have an image of the amp with FX (RG75DG3) this is not the one you will receive. The title is more accurate than the image and specs.
