v2 Software

The free v2 software includes Cakewalk SONAR™ and Apple Logic™ modes that enable these powerful DAWs to be controlled out of the box with the knobs on the hardware assigning to their equivalent software controllers, all at the touch of a button. In Logic, for example, the hardware M-16DX appears in the software’s list of compatible controllers and the equivalent controls are tied together automatically once it’s selected. In both SONAR and Logic the controls are assigned in an incredibly logical way so that users will quickly be able to navigate around their chosen software with the EDIROL hardware.

The new v2 software can, of course, be used to control all other software that has a MIDI learn facility such as Reason, Ableton Live and many soft synths. This enables any user to make full use of the 54 hardware knobs and numerous assignable buttons on the mixer surface.

The update isn’t just limited to providing MIDI control either. The Scene Memory function has been expanded with the number of memories doubling from 8 to 16 and now each memory is editable whilst loaded.

3-band EQ Controls

Each channel strip is equipped with Low-Cut Filter, 3-Band EQ, Pan, Aux, Select, Solo/Mute and Level controls. The Midrange EQ has Q & frequency controls for precise tone shaping on each channel. Edirol M16DX

The Spec list is impressive, and for such a small piece of kit, the Edirol M16DX will impress with it\'s functionality and felixibilty.

The user interface is pretty self explanitory, the manual is straightforward and thorough, leaving little doubt as to which button does what, and how. Anything you can\'t find in the manual can be located in additional guidebook pdfs from the Roland website.

Having used the Edirol M16DX for recording live in the rehearsal room straight into Logic on my Macbook, i found it a pleasure to work with. Edirol have made an excellent product here, and at less than £300, it\'s an absolute bargain.

It\'s a small, flexible multi-channel mixer, with FX, EQ, monitor output, works brilliantly with Logic, captures 12 channels of pure audio faultlessly via USB, and can also be used for live mixing, or traditional studio recording too.

That\'s not to say there aren\'t downsides though. One obvious shortcoming is that there are only 4 mic pre-amps, and the 6 stereo channels (which each double up as 2 mono channels) don\'t have dedicated gain controls. In short, if you\'re going to record a band, you\'ll need an additional multi-channel mic pre-amp unit to get the best out of the kit.

Also, the mixer portion of the unit is very small, taking up less surface space than your average laptop, so be prepared! Goliath may want to hand over the controls to David on this one, given that the knobs and faders are pretty close together, and rather small. Patience and a touch of grace is certainly required in getting to grips with the M16DX.

I\'m happy with my purchase, and i look forward to getting consistently high quality results with the M16DX. I doubt that it will replace any pro-hardware in any studio, but for those on a budget, or those simply looking for a portable, multi-channel recording unit, the Edirol M16DX is well worth taking a chance on.
