Mackie 1604-VLZ3
A slick and stunningly compact mixer. I have owned my VZL3 for 2 years ad have used in a wide range of settings and have enjoyed using it. I bought it because at the time i loved Mackie and i couldn\\\'t get the onyx 16 channel into my budget, a mixer i would of much preferred, but the VZL3 was the logical compromise.
Two qualities you want from a mixer are easy of use and sound quality. Both seem to be great.
Using the desk is easy with its signal and clip lights making sound check simple and the PFL always coming in useful. Aux solos for monitors and direct out are a nice addition. For the rest its the same as any mackie or 19 inch mixer.
The EQ is the most annoying part of the mixer because the channel strip is the wrong way round with the AUX sends being under the gain. Every time i use this desk i always make the mistake of cutting a monitor feed rather than dropping 200 HZ. Why break from convention?
The Preamps are as clean as you would like but i cant help chomping up headroom like crazy. it just seems to run out of puff once i have dialed in the drums.
Comparing this to a larger Allen heath or onyx is hard as every mixer has a different personality and a different feel. The build quality makes this mixer worth the money and i would beg on hand and knee that you buy this and not a behringer or phonic. The mackie is built to work hard and it would be a great addition to a small PA or a band set up.
