Review of the SQUIER BY FENDER STRAT PACK WITH G-DEC
I ordered this pack over two months ago and here is what I think.
The shop
Over the phone, the guys here were extremely friendly, polite and helpful. Everything worked out exactly as we discussed on the phone and my order, which included other items, were all present and complete (but see comment below about number of frets). I even got after-sale emails asking me to share my experience and views on the service, is this good service or what? This fine establishment, Dolphin, uses FedEx to deliver and they will deliver even on a Saturday (for an extra charge). The delivery arrived on time, nice and early and, I mean even the FedEx guy greets you with a smile, so what’s not to like?
The goodies
I am a novice player, but I dare say I read enough and researched enough to give a useful opinion. The Squier Affinity HSS in this package is a good guitar, despite the fact it is made in Indonesia. Mine is a perfectly produced specimen: the neck is well set, the tuners are responsive and the guitar hardly ever needs retuning (I test before playing every day), the fretboard is perfectly finished and perfectly rounded with the neck, the frets themselves are perfectly set and smoothed--I mean, forget about the horror stories I’ve read on the net where people were saying frets were to sharp, not well set, or came off--none of that thank you very much! The electronics are all working in perfect order, the knobs feel solid and do what they’re supposed to do, the whole thing is just, well, perfect. Okay, maybe not given that the pickguard has a distinct cheap plastic feel to it and a couple of screws look a little wonky, but come-on, for this price and functionality did you want gold inlays?
The only annoying thing was my discovery that the neck on this guitar had 21, not 22 frets as advertised. Shouldn’t cause a problem for most beginners who won’t be shredding just yet. And in a way, well, if you’re gonna be shredding you’re not gonna be interested in this product in the first place, right?
I suspect the guitar could benefit from a visit to a good local guitar shop to improve playability and cut on some minimal string-ringing. In that, this guitar is equal to some £2000 Gibsons according to my research. As it is, out of the box, it does a good job for me.
The guitar sounds great. Not tons of sustain, sure, but it’s the best you\'d get in this price range. The solid body and the rosewood fretboard on a maple neck deliver some sweet tones and good-enough sustain.
Finally for the guitar, the gigbag included is a fine one and that\'s where the guitar lives when it\'s not being played.
Now, the amp included here is what made me buy the package. The G-DEC Junior is a one versatile amp. All advertised details are true and accurate. This amp will encourage you, as it does me, to try, experiment, change settings and have real fun with good clean or powerful distorted sounds. If you’re worried about motivation to continue playing, nothing is better than a good amp to give you change and discovery every step of the way. Suffice it to say that I find all the sounds I need and crave in the acoustic, tweed, metal and British settings, and the distortion you get from the gain knob is phenomenal. Just slide your pickup selector on the guitar to the humbucker position and get ready to be evicted from your house because of the beautiful noise. Of course there is a little buzz, but it’s noticeable in high volumes and when you’re not playing only. But again, this is the best starter/semi-pro practice amp you can hope to lay your hands on, I say that after lots of rigorous research, but don’t just take my word, you’ll see for yourself when you own one.
On the whole, I’m very pleased with my choice of instrument and other equipment and pleased with the Dolphin service. Dolphin will be my first port of call whenever it’s time to add to or upgrade my gear.
Start Playing
Full marks for prompt next day delivery. My last electric guitar was purchased 40 years ago and when I started playing this one I was amazed by how much quality has increased over the years. This is an inexpensive guitar but it stays in tune and the inntonation is spot on. Action is fine and it gives a nice range of tones from the pickups. The G-dec amp can be loud but it can also produce excellent sound at low volumes. Plenty of tonal variety too, switch the drums and bass on and you only have to be able to play a few notes to sound like a combo. Highly recommended.
Starter pack
Having learnt a few of the basics on an acoustic guitar I decided to get my first electric guitar & amp. I have no experience of other electric guitars but i am very impressed with the quality of this package. The guitar seems very well put together and is a pleasure to play, and the amp has an extraordinary range of features. excellent value for money I think
