Very good gear
I\'ve owned this microphone for about six months, so now I can do a correct review about it.
In my case this mic found a \"perfect place\" in my home-based-studio, being the natural \"missing link\" with the other microphones I own (a Rode K2 tube large diphragm condenser mic and a pair of SE Electronics SE-3 , small diaphragm condenser mics)
The audio response of this Audio-Technica AT4047SVSM appear as being half-way between the fratures of the other two mics :
- Good bass responses even if less deep than the Rode K2.
- Good hi-ends (even if less the crystal-like ones returned by the SEElectronics SE-3)
- Good quickness to transients (even if a little less than a small diaphragm mic)
Also it has some excellences when compared to the other two :
- It it the more quiet.
- It is the less colouring (more natural response)
I use it with success with voices, guitar amp and (as alternate stereo track) in conjuction with SE-3 mic into the acutic guitar recording.
I choose this mic when I wish an hi-fi response with some basses and generally a \"dry\" response.
I choose the Rode-K2 when I want a \"vintage\" response with deeper basses and a watery mood.
I choose the SEElectronics Se-3 when I wish crystal like mid-ranges and hi-ends (acoustic guitar for example)
The -10DB switch on the AT4047SVSM is very effective and useful, and most important doesn\'t introduce too much variations in frequency response. The attenuator is really necessary if you have to place it in front to an amp speaker.
The shock mounting is realized with quality materials, but its design its not very \"safe\".
I mean that it works fine when placed (normally) in vertical but being the mic inside \"floating\" it become tilted in a strange way if you tilt the shock mouting. Also it can allow the mic to fall down if (for any reason) you tilt the shock-mounting too much. In fact the mic is not locked in any way ...it just rests over an support.
The case is quite poor for the price of the mic, but its good for me (I dont have to travel with it at all) but I prefer effectively to have a poor case and to get a less expansive deal!
I would suggest this mic also to people that are going to buy its first condenser mic. Very general purpose, no colouring, no noisy, quick response. Very nice piece!
