Epiphone G-400 Cherry
Looks
The Guitar has a beautiful shiny dark red finish which no picture will quite do justice to.
Sound
The sound from this guitar into a clean marshall 15 watt practice amp is very dull (even with high treble settings and low bass) but some nice 1940/50s clean gibson sounds can be coaxed out of it with careful EQing (dont expect fender sounds here!), but its with distortion where the dual humbuckers begin to shine, into the marshall 15 watt some classic 1970's rock sounds like thin lizzy and guns n roses can be obtained.
The sound is virtually the same when direct inputted (DI'd) into the computer (without the amp)
Due the pickups being humbuckers there is virtually no hum except when using Very High Gain near computer moniters and electrical equipment.
Feel
The guitar is very light and thin and because of the dual cutouts allow good access to the 22 frets for guitar solos (which is good)! But Because the neck sticks out slighty more than a standard guitars the guitar is neck heavy and this proves a problem when your standing up (with the guitar strap on) because the guitar wont stay in one place and keeps sliding towards the floor (neck side).
Controls
The controls are set in a very good fashion all bunched together with a volume and tone control for each pickup. The Pickup selector can select either of the two pickups or both for tonal variation.
Conclusion
Overall this guitar is more suited to heavier styles of music even metal. it is basically a light version of the les paul with better control layout, better access to higher frets and a little less sustain due to the lighter body.
Epiphone G400 Vintage (worn brown/cherry)
Ok first im really sorry for sticking this in the totally wrong place first off (a tannoy studio monitor review) that was stupid. Sorry whoever has to fix that/read that... ANYWAY!
Having seen and played a lot of epiphone's gibson models, I have to say they are so impressive that i cant think of any reason why its worth forking out more for a 'genuine' gibson, apart from the prestige that comes with the price tag.
First off, the finish is beautiful. for the very reasonable asking price, it is as close to perfection as can be. the smooth satin finished neck and body look and more importantly, feel great. All chrome and plastic parts are in good shape too, albeit for the odd choice of colour for the pickup selector swith - bright orange. Slight imperfections in the binding are all i can find on the neck, but at VERY close range. Finish (for the price) 10/10
The guitar is very playable, its light and fast, but feels just solid enough to rock out with. The sg feels quite vulnerable compared to les paul models due to its significantly thinner body, and i dont think this thing could survive too many drops or kicks, or drummers standing on it while getting stuff out of the van - so consider a hard case if you gig a lot! out of the box, it needs some tweeking to get to your liking, pickup height, string height etc need a but of fine tuning. some sloppy assembly around the bridge area left the screws a bit damaged and out of line, but no biggie. Nut seems a little on the plasticky side, but holds and plays fine with no rattle or play.
Build quality 7/10
The really important bit is how it sounds, and this guitar cooks! it has bite, warmth and a variety of tonal oportunities from its controls, laid out as 2 volume and 2 tone, controlling each pickup independantly. The pickup selector switch runs bridge (marked treble), neck (rhythm) and both (middle position). Using these and a quality amp give you anything from all out rock and roll, to blues, to... well pretty much anything! The versatilty of this guitar is very impressive. Its partly due to the thinness of the body, the lower sustain time and the quicker decay of sound (acoustically speaking) gives a well rounded and warm tone, but hard woods give it a clear biting attack. Also the pickups are of suprisingly high quality, with expected noise, but generally very quiet when run together or clean. Superb!
Sound 9/10
PROS: looks fantastic, plays fantastic, sounds fantastic, smells fantastic... its just fantastic!
CONS: Possibly built by (very skilled) korean orphans to get it to you at such a low cost, lazy part assembly, concerns about strength (all sg style guitars)
ALL IN ALL, 9/10, forget the gibson sg special of around the same price tag, it doesnt even come close to this guitar in any way (after tweeking, of course). Do not be fooled by MADE IN AMERICA, it means nothing.
