The LSR4300 Series Studio Monitors are designed for critical stereo and multi-channel audio production applications that require exceptional spectral accuracy and high SPL capability.

Acknowledging that much of today’s production is carried out in acoustically untreated rooms, the LSR4300 Series is the first professional monitor to combine JBL’s Linear Spatial Reference technology and automated RMC™ Room Mode Correction, an onboard system that automatically compensates for low frequency anomalies measured at the mix position.

The LSR4300 enhances computer-based production by incorporating system-wide volume control, input source selection, individual speaker solo and user EQ. Harman HiQnet™ Network protocol enables centralized system-wide control from any speaker, wireless remote control and computer using LSR4300 Control Center Software.

438H Low Frequency Transducer

The 8" woofer utilizes a powerful, shielded neodymium magnet of light weight which can be used in close proximity to CRT-type monitors with no interference. The transducer utilizes a copper-clad polepiece that improves high frequency output by reducing voice coil inductance. A copper ribbon voice coil ensures high sensitivity, and a flux shorting ring stabilizes the magnetic field in the gap, reducing distortion. Heat sinking has been placed close to the magnetic gap in order to draw out heat as efficiently as possible. The cone is polymer coated for uniformity of response over the woofer's passband.

431G High Frequency Transducer

The high frequency transducer has a treated silk diaphragm that produces uniform and smooth sound. Its flat ribbon aluminum voice coil ensures low moving mass and enables the transducer to achieve response out to 22 kHz. A light weight neodymium magnet structure with integral heat sinking, along with Ferrofluid in the magnetic gap, enable the transducer to produce high peak output levels with minimal power compression. The magnet structure is integrally shielded, enabling the system to be used in proximity to CRT-type monitors with no interference.

Bi-amplified Power System

The LSR4328P incorporates two high power amplifiers that provide 150 Watts of power to the low frequency transducer and 70 Watts of power to the high frequency transducer. A precision digital dividing network having high-order Linkwitz-Riley slope characteristics for smooth transition between transducers, results in exceptional imaging and lack of time smear. The circuitry also yields a tonal-artifact-free noise floor.

Network and Digital Features

The LSR4300 Series utilizes the Harman HiQnet™ network protocol that allows centralized control of a multi-channel system from a from any speaker’s front panel, wireless remote control, or computer via a standard USB connection and LSR4300 Control Center Software. The network is configured using supplied CAT5 cable and by setting a DIP switch on each speaker. Harman HiQnet also enables synchronized RMC calibration of all speakers on the network.

Automated RMC™ Room Mode Correction System

Room modes” (sometimes called “standing waves”) can produce a low frequency resonance that gives a misleading impression of bass response at the listening position. RMC™ (short for “Room Mode Correction”) in the LSR4300 series automatically analyzes the frequency response of the speakers at the listening position and automatically applies a corrective filter to minimize low frequency resonance.

When the calibration mic is connected and the RMC analysis is initiated, the LSR4300 RMC system applies a parametric filter at any of 73 frequencies (1/24th octave centers) between 20 Hz and 160 Hz, with a variable Q from 1 (1.4 octave bandwidth) to 16 (1/11th octave bandwidth), with 3 to 12 dB of attenuation. During the RMC calibration process, speaker levels are trimmed in 0.25 dB increments so that all speakers in the system produce equal SPL (sound pressure level) at the mix position.

Key Features

  • Advanced Linear Spatial Reference design ensures flatter-off-axis response for greater clarity at the mix position
  • RMC™ Room Mode Correction provides electronic control of room modes.
  • Integrated bi-amplification with factory calibrated sensitivities.
  • Silk dome transducer with Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal waveguide for precise pattern control.
  • Magnetically shielded transducers minimize interference when used in close proximity to video monitors.
  • Reinforced enclosure and convenient mounting points for mounted installation.
  • Integral handles facilitate ease of positioning.

I think these are amazing. I do a lot of recording on location and at home, and while the rest of my gear does everything I need, I had inferior monitors and began to have serious concerns about inconsistent sound.

Being careful with money, it seemed a bit difficult to justify spending money on something which is not actually part of the recorded signal path, but the choice of monitor deeply affects the finished product, and I realised I needed a set of monitors I could absolutely trust.

I bought these after reading many reviews, and having now used them over a couple of very different projects, what I love is that these monitors make it so easy to produce mixes which work over a range of audio devices from small computer speakers, car audio and portable CDs to big home hi-fis. Their audio quality is superb. I did consider buying the sub-woofer and going for the smaller LSR4326’s, but I didn’t want yet another thing to have to take on location, and to be honest it was the right decision: as a stand-alone pair for the audio work I do (stereo acoustic musical instruments with some sampled instruments) the bass is wonderful – it’s “there” and seems totally part of the sound you hear.

There are some practical things I’ve discovered on using these, which it might be useful to know about:

1) It is important to treat your room (even just a bit!) to make good use of any speaker. However, the LSR function really helps clean up and focus the sound in any situation. The speakers worked well in one location with curtains (temporarily) covering the walls, and our second location was a church in a room full of old junk – boxes, candles, books etc – which actually was great as it broke up the room reflections. Obviously in a perfect world you’d have a perfect acoustic environment for your speakers – and if you do, I’d still recommend these ones!

2) Coming from an era where speakers just had one input, be aware that there are lots of bits and bobs to plug in. There’s the spdif in / out, the network cables, the mains and the usb (if you use the control panel on your pc – it is useful, so worth the extra lead). That’s quite a lot of “stuff” connected to each one and while this isn’t normally a problem in a fixed installation, you need to allow time for this if working on location. The LSR mic plugs in temporarily to do four quick \"sweeps\" and then you unplug that and your\'re good to go. Only one niggle – not a significant one really: when I dismantled the system at the end of my sessions, I found the network leads / terminations quite difficult to remove.

4) Good speaker stands are very useful in uncontrolled environments. Bear in mind that the LSR4328Ps are bigger and heavier than you might think, and you don\'t want to break them! After buying these speakers, I did a bit of research and bought a pair of QuikLok BS-300 adjustable speaker stands - they are very stable (locking to 5 different heights) and have a 9 inch square plate at the top, with triangular adjustable plate at the bottom, so work on any surface, however uneven. The speakers fit on the stands perfectly – I secured them with four small bits of sticky Velcro on the base of the speaker – just to stop them being knocked off the stand. It’s worth having some temporary cable management (for example, I use a loop of double-sided Velcro to secure all the leads to the speaker stands to keep them tidier).

5) The isolation pads which you can also buy from Dolphin are really good if you are using these speakers on a table – they isolate the speakers from any contact and the speakers will still sound great!

While on one level, monitor speakers are just tools to do a job, these are outstanding tools which let you do a really professional job! I love these things and have absolutely no regrets about purchasing them.

1st part having them about 1 week in my possession.
1st part, because I have the feeling that it is too early to give a final opinion about them.
They do not sound harsh in the high frequency, which is certainly nice. But, for some reason I have the impression that they there is some kind of boxiness. You get a clear and well positioned reproduction for instruments and vocals which are mixed to the centre. But signals which are panned to the left or right have the tendency to 'stick' to the speakers... They do not become totally part of a 'detached' sound field. I added spikes underneath them and put them on massive concrete stands because I know, out of earlier experiences, that this improves definition. But not now... It might be that both the drivers, electronics and the amplifiers need some time before they show their full potential. I tend to believe that this the case for these JBL's (although I did not read this in reviews). To be seen...
RMC is a nice feature which indeed improves the reproduction in the low frequency areas.
Overall first impression is positive but I'm not totally convinced... yet.
