MOTU 8Pre
I bought the 8Pre two years ago after I had finished college and lost access to their recording facilities. I wanted more inputs than my Audio Kontrol (which was great), quality conversion/pre amps and affordability.
I chose this over any Focusrite or similar gear because I\'d used MOTU previously and felt they were pretty stable. I was glad I did. I had no problem setting this up and it had every thing I needed (MIDI, 8 inputs, headphone out, phantom power). I was using it as a standalone audio interface. I was able to record and monitor comfortably at home and I even took my 8Pre out and recorded a full drum kit in a mill.
The sound of the unit is excellent. The Pre amps buzzed slightly when pushed hard but other wise sounded great. There was loads of areas where you can expand this unit with the 828, 829 or another 8pre although I never needed to. For the price, the 8 Pre amps in this machine are well worth it. The metering is nice and the headphone output is loud enough to monitor on in most situations.
After I joined university I lost the need for 8 inputs so it lost its use. Whilst using the machine one day I brushed my hand against the back of the firewire port. This broke the port completely and rendered it useless. I was 2 months out of warranty but I contacted MOTU support and they replaced it initially expecting payment but they never sent me a bill.
For what it does and its price it deserves a solid 8 out of 10! Highly recommended if you just want to get out there and record on 8 quality inputs!
Great!
I was thinking to buy a Saffire, but a sales man from Dolphin suggested me to try the MOTU pre8. Well, I knew MOTU could sound better then a few brands in the market...but he helped me to make the final decision.
Im very happy and satisfied with the results Im getting from the PRE8.
thanks Dolphin
Not a bad thing to say!
I bought this to replace my M-audio ozone interface as the pre-amp on it was really dodgy and the difference in sound quality is so good! Very clear, just like MOTU say and it\'s great having the extra inputs. The CueMix software offers incredibly low latency (almost none) and I find the routing to enable recording the output back into the computer very handy. I think this product offers the potential for the user to produce proffessional, high quality mixes. Seriously, the only way you could beat it is by buying products with a significantly higher price tag (you know, the high end, top of the range stuff).
Dolphin Music were great. It\'s so satisfying to buy from a company that obviously has put a lot of thought into the welfare of the customer; easy navigation, order FAQ section, secure purchasing, prompt feedback and info on your delivery, speedy delivery, no problems at all....I feel all warm inside :)
(when Dolphin emailed to ask if I wanted write a review I actually looked forward to doing it! That\'s saying something)
ps. I did not give 10/10 as it has no tea and coffee making facilities
