Short Review
This synth is awesome it does so much!
It has as much if not more functions than its rivals (microkorg, miniak, micron etc)
but is cheaper.
It is not as good looking, and the build quality isnt great but as long as you arent smacking it, it should be fine!
Great sounding thing, and great first synth.

For what I want, this is a seriously great synth for the price. I needed a midi controller and computer audio interface for my growing home studio, and I have always wanted a synth. But I didn\'t realize I would be able to get all three in one really compact package.
Initially, I had a few problems getting the synth to record in logic studio, but this was more to do with me being a total logic / mac novice
- and yet the people at novation kindly went out of their way to explain step by step how to set it up in logic when I asked them in an email. They replied quickly as well, and all in all they have provided outstanding customer service.
The synth is very versatile. The bass sounds are particularly good, but I love using some of the pre-programmed funk leads with the mod joystick. I admit, I\'ve not really delved into making my own patches yet, and I\'d imagine the small screen and small fonts on the knobs and buttons aren\'t the most user friendly, but for saying that all the sounds loaded on it already have been built using only whats there, there is obviously a lot of scope for almost any type of synth sound you want.
There are no problems with using this as a midi controller in logic... this part was plug and play.
If I had more space I would have gone for the 49 key version, but as space is an issue this fits in perfectly in the slide-out keyboard tray in my computer desk.

When i first went about looking for a small, cheap synth to buy i started off thinking about such things as a microkorg, and maybe even an alesis micron. However i wasnt happy, the microkorg seems like a good synth but nearly everyone has one and i never really looked into the alesis as much. Then i stumbled upon the xiosynth and was shocked at the price.
£164.99 for a 25 key synth with 3 ocillators, midi controling and an audio interface.
Ill skip to the main points now that i was amazed by...
although i am new to hardware synthesisers and have only really used soft synths im happy with the capabilities of the xio. The synth comes with 200 good presets but i have found about 300 more on the internet. Editing or creating sounds is much easier than some people make out, most buttons have at least 2 functions but after a bit or playing you get used to it.
The midi controlling side of the synth is really good. You can use it to control software with the 16 presets already on it. However, you can also use it to control other hardware with ease. When using the xio live i also use it to control a yamaha djx iib, which has no keys but has general midi sounds such as piano which you may need live. However once set i can use both the sounds from the xio and djx iib without touching the djx for the whole set. I can even keep the keys for the xio sounds and the buttons at the top for the djx sounds.
The interface on the xio may be simple but it works, letting you record into software of simple plug something into the xio so that you can hear it out of whatever speaker the xio is playing through.
All together i think the xio is amazing for the price, maybe if i had more money and could afford a really expensive synth i may not think the same. However if you want a cheap 3 in 1 synth that sounds like its worth alot more then get one of these.
I went from using software synths to not wanting to make songs withiout my xio.
to see it in action a little bit go on
