This is a fine piece of kit, for those wishing to add extra sparkle to their MIDI music. High quality sound sets, coupled with easy connectivity and trouble-free installation make it a very useful item for the home or travelling studio.

The SD-20 is very compact and light as anyone who has seen its heavyweight brother the SD-90 will tell you and the simple front face is easy to follow. The sheer number of connections possible on the back panel should make it a doddle to connect, whatever your equipment. The ability to switch between bus powered and self powered mode is particualry useful as it cuts down on carrying extra power supplies on the move, but means you get a more stable environment if you already have a huge drain on your USB power rail.

I was very impressed with the high quality of the GM2/Native soundset which has very 'human sounding' orchestral instruments, with variable vibrato on the string sounds and different attack on the brass, which adds to the realism in both chamber and full-on orchestral music.

Where there is a slight downside, the XG and GS soundsets can be fiddly to switch to in software (rather than using the front panel mode switch)as can the 3 available instrument sets. Also there seems to be a slight problem with USB if the machine has auto-switch-off, sometimes the native soundset gets replaced by the standard (and very nasty) Microsoft wavetable soundset and you have to fully switch off and unplug to get it back. (This was also a problem with the SD-90). Having said that, it has run very smoothly on my laptop and will, I'm sure, provide me with many years for faithfull service.

All-in-all, this is a very good product for those of us making music on a budget. The sound quality is excellent and the price is reasonable.
