Clean
I had been using the preamps on my digi recorder and the ones on my mixer. I also have a cheapo Art Tube MP preamp with a valve in it. The ones on the mixer etc don't give that much power. The Art TMP gives a lot of boost but also some noise, and it changes the sound (which some might say is a good thing).
The DMP3 does as promised - delivers as much gain as you could possibly want, but without any unwanted noise. Doesn't colour the sound. Pretty straightforward really, it is good for condenser mics that require a lot of power.
The oldskool VU display is not a lot of use in practical terms, but it looks good!
I haven't tried it out wiht a D.I. signal yet, only with condenser mics.
