Review of 828 Mk II
Coming off the back of the original 828 model (released in 2001 - the first audio interface to incorporate Firewire technology), this had many expectations to live up to. Having read all good things about this piece, I upgraded from the original, worrying that I may have made a mistake. It was not to be the case!
The Mk II kept all the good features of the original model (ADAT sync, 2 Monitor/Main outs, stereo s/pdif coaxial i/o to name but a few) and coupled these with the following:
-Backlight on display
-Front panel programming
-Moved the Mic/line jacks to the front panel for easier access
-Added switch for 48v phantom power
-Additional Firewire port
-Front panel metering for all analog inputs, s/pdif and mic inputs and main outputs
-SMPTE sync
-the maximum sample rate upped from 48kHz to a massive 96 Khz !
-MIDI i/o...
You get the general idea!
In use, the latency is extremely low and the preamps clean and crystal clear. I managed to connect it with ease into my rack system (Using the ADAT ,my computer's Emu 1820M is connected to the 828 via ADAT and Word Clock. All 8 channels are sent from the PC via Cubase straight into the 828..All this with 3 cables!!
I chose this over the Digi002 rack as despite the promise of software bundles, the Digi002 doesn't work as well with Cubase SX3, and am I glad I decided in favour of the 828!
My only grumble is that the picture on the site showed a blue front, and my model has a green one. After a swift call to make sure I had the correct model, it transpired the blue was only a Beta version, and the green was the "real deal". Other than this, after 6 months of use, it is still in immaculate condition and works as if it were new!
Well done Mark Of The Unicorn!
motu 828 mk II
I have purchased this card about 2 years now, and still works flawlesly under various computers running win XP. Still one of the best soundcards at this price range.Sound quality and easy of use is at the highest standards,as most MOTU equipment.
This card is capable of delivering 10 analog i/o's plus 8 adat i/o's(although i have never used any of the adats yet), plus u get midi an extra firewire and all the other extras like word clock etc.
Two of the analog inputs have mic preamps providing phantom power so you can use all kinds of mics available. From my own experience the preamps can deliver nice results, not same, but identical to my mackie's desk XDR pre's.
This card is mosttly designed for studio use and not for traveling, but ofcourse it is up to you.I bought it for both studio and travel and is serving both well.Although I would recommend to take the rack ears off for better handling. The main disdvantage though for travel is that it requires a plug for powering, and it is 1u size. For people with mainly traveling in mind I would recommend the traveler card by motu.
Even this card is aging still is one of the most powerful and cheapest(for what is on offer)FW400 soundcards around.
